Description
Dantetsu Ichimonji is a complex figure whose story is rooted in tragedy and redemption. Originally a renowned Japanese astronaut, he was chosen to lead humanity's first expedition to colonize the planet Promete, a mission organized by Dr. Oedo. However, the renegade scientist Mr. Doppler sabotaged the launch, framing Dantetsu for the destruction of the mission and the deaths of his fellow crew members. Presumed dead, Dantetsu was instead captured by Doppler, who subjected him to extensive brainwashing and placed a memory-suppressing mask on him, forcing him to become a brainwashed agent of the Doppler forces. As a result of this betrayal, Dantetsu's young son, Takuma Ichimonji, endured years of social scorn, being branded the "traitor's son".

A decade later, Dantetsu resurfaced under the alias "Captain Dan", having somehow escaped from Doppler's base. Despite his escape, he continued to suffer the lingering effects of the brainwashing, including fragmented memories and intense headaches caused by a control device still implanted in him. As Captain Dan, he joined the new Japanese Promete project, known as Jasdam, where he took on the role of a supremely skilled but harsh flight instructor. His primary duty was to train a new generation of cadets, including his own unrecognized son Takuma, to pilot the giant robot Danguard Ace. He piloted the Guard Launcher component, which formed the head and upper torso of the robot, and frequently coordinated with co-pilots who operated the lower-body Satellizer module. His training methods were notably brutal and demanding, focusing intensely on discipline and combat readiness against Doppler's mechanized armies.

The central conflict of his character lies in his dual identity. While he acted as a strict mentor, he was unaware that the young pilot he was pushing so hard was his own son. In the eleventh episode, Dantetsu's memories returned to him after a significant head injury. However, he made the conscious decision to keep his mask on and his true identity a secret from Takuma, choosing instead to continue training him with unrelenting intensity. His motivations from this point forward were driven by a restored sense of justice and a desire for redemption: to dismantle Doppler's tyrannical regime and clear his own tarnished name.

The revelation of his identity came under tragic circumstances. After his mask was knocked off due to an injury in episode 33, Takuma finally learned that Captain Dan was his long-lost father. This emotional reunion was devastatingly brief. Two episodes later, in episode 35, Dantetsu Ichimonji died, sacrificing himself before he could truly reconcile with his son or share the fatherly affection he had held back for so long. His legacy is defined by his extraordinary piloting prowess, his resilience in overcoming psychological manipulation, and his ultimate role in Earth's fight for the future of Promete.
