Description
Martha is a supporting character in the 1991 anime adaptation of The Secret Garden, which is titled Anime Himitsu no Hanazono. She serves as a chambermaid at Misselthwaite Manor, the estate of Archibald Craven. Martha is depicted as a teenage girl with short brown hair that reaches her ears and black eyes. Her background is modest: she comes from a large, impoverished family living in the Yorkshire countryside. Despite her family's limited means, she is known for being hard-working, no-nonsense, and generous. She is also deeply family-oriented and speaks warmly of her mother and her younger brother, Dickon Sowerby.

Martha's primary role in the story is to attend to Mary Lennox, the orphaned niece of Archibald Craven who has recently arrived from India. From their first meeting, Mary learns that Martha will not tolerate tantrums or entitled behavior, expecting Mary to dress herself and act independently. At the same time, Martha is gentle and perceptive: she notices Mary's curiosity about the outdoors and arranges for her to receive a set of gardening tools. She also tells Mary about the walled garden that has been locked for years and introduces her to the local Yorkshire dialect and customs. Most importantly, Martha brings Mary together with her brother Dickon, whose knowledge of nature and animals becomes central to Mary's personal growth and the revival of the secret garden.

Martha's motivations are rooted in her sense of duty and her innate kindness. She wants to do her job well but also genuinely cares for Mary's well-being and happiness. She does not undergo significant personal change throughout the narrative; instead, she functions as a steady and positive influence who helps Mary adjust to her new environment and discover a sense of purpose. Martha's key relationships include her close bond with her family, especially her mother Susan Sowerby and brother Dickon, as well as her professional but caring relationship with Mary. She is also a familiar figure among the other servants at the manor. Martha does not possess any special abilities beyond practical skills such as cleaning, cooking, and a basic understanding of gardening. Her greatest strength lies in her straightforward, honest, and empathetic nature, which makes her an effective bridge between Mary's isolated world and the richer, more connected life that awaits her on the Yorkshire moor.
