OVA
Description
Francoise Arnoul, designated Cyborg 003, is a character from the crossover OVA. Of French origin, she was once a promising ballet dancer in Paris before her life was irrevocably changed when she was abducted by the nefarious organization Black Ghost. She was forcibly transformed into the third prototype of their 00-series cyborgs, a process that replaced her limbs and much of her body with cybernetics. After her conversion, she and her fellow cyborgs, with the aid of the scientist Dr. Gilmore, managed to rebel and escape from their captors.
In terms of personality, Francoise is defined by her gentle, compassionate, and pacifistic nature. She consistently tries to reason with her enemies and prefers to resolve conflicts without violence, only fighting when absolutely no other option remains. This sweetness makes her the moral center and emotional support of the 00 cyborg team, where she naturally assumes the role of a caring "big sister," especially towards the infantile Cyborg 001. While generally kind, her incarnation in this crossover is noted to be more proactive and serious on the battlefield compared to some of her earlier depictions, showing a readiness to engage when the situation demands it. A key aspect of her character is her deep, though often unspoken, romantic affection for her teammate Joe Shimamura, Cyborg 009. Their relationship is marked by a mutual shyness that prevents them from fully conveying their feelings for one another.
Within the story, Francoise serves a vital tactical and reconnaissance role. Her primary abilities are her enhanced super-hearing and super-sight, which are part of her cybernetic enhancements. These senses allow her to act as a human radar, detecting threats from miles away, seeing through solid objects and cloaking technology, and locking onto multiple enemies simultaneously. Her capacity to process this information makes her the nucleus of the team's cooperation, as she dictates enemy coordinates and formulates effective battle strategies that leverage the unique powers of her teammates. In addition to her sensory powers, she is a skilled marksman with her Super Gun and possesses a high degree of technical aptitude, able to interface with supercomputers to track targets.
In the crossover's narrative, her development is shown through her proactive investigative work. Early on, she uses her abilities to uncover a Black Ghost plot and later plays a vital part in a rescue mission. When the team crosses paths with the demonic threat, Francoise is instrumental in locating the demon-possessed Akira Fudo, also known as Devilman, by using a supercomputer. She accompanies Joe to investigate the demon activity, where her enhanced senses allow her to detect the demon Lilith. Despite her more supportive role, her personal stake in the fight becomes evident when Joe is severely injured in a battle with Devilman; her scream of anguish shows the deep personal cost of the conflict. She later proves immune to Lilith's illusions, which only affect men, allowing her to maintain combat readiness and come to her team's aid. During the final confrontations, her tactical mind comes to the forefront as she coordinates the 00 cyborgs to victory against the High-Teen Number Cyborgs, solidifying her role as a crucial leader and strategist.
