Description
Hikari Kujou is one of the main characters in Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart. She is a girl who appears in the human world with no memories of her past, possessing a gentle and mysterious aura. Her true nature is revealed over the course of the story: she is the physical incarnation of the life force of the Queen of the Garden of Light. After the Queen was fractured in a great battle, she split into three parts: the twelve Heartiels which represent her will, the Queen Chairect which is her heart, and Hikari herself, who embodies the Queen's life.
As a result of this origin, Hikari begins her life on Earth as a blank slate, which gives her a noticeably naive, wide-eyed, and innocent personality. She is a very polite, kind, and considerate person who rarely shows anger or frustration, often choosing to keep her worries to herself so as not to trouble those around her. This tendency to suppress her own concerns can sometimes be a source of worry for her friends, who wish she would be more open with them. She is a first-year student at Verone Academy and lives with Fujita Akane, the owner of a takoyaki stall called Tako Cafe, who introduces Hikari as her cousin.
Throughout the series, Hikari is driven by a quiet but persistent need to understand her own identity and past. She is often seen gazing thoughtfully at the sky, pondering where she came from. Her motivations become clearer as she learns about her connection to the Garden of Light and the quest to gather the Heartiels, which is essential for the Queen's revival. Her role in the story is dual: she is both a student trying to find her place in the world and a warrior fighting to protect it. She becomes the third member of the team, transforming into the legendary warrior Shiny Luminous. Unlike Cure Black and Cure White, whose powers are focused on direct, offensive combat, Shiny Luminous is a support-type fighter. She uses her abilities to amplify the powers of her partners, create defensive barriers for protection, and immobilize enemies, proving that her role is just as critical to the team's success.
Her key relationships are central to her development. She shares a deep, almost instinctual bond with Misumi Nagisa and Yukishiro Honoka, the original Pretty Cure, feeling a sense of familiarity with them from their first meeting. They become her closest friends and act as guides, introducing her to the joys and complexities of human life. The dynamic is also somewhat protective, with Nagisa and Honoka often acting as older, more experienced figures who worry about her safety. She also forms strong bonds with the fairies. She is entrusted with Pollun, who becomes the device that allows her to transform, and she takes care of his sister, Lulun, showing a very gentle and nurturing side. Another significant relationship is with a mysterious young boy she encounters several times; he is later revealed to be her younger brother, Kujou Hikaru.
Over the course of Max Heart, Hikari undergoes significant development. She starts as a passive, almost ethereal figure who is largely defined by her mysterious past and a sense of not belonging. Through her friendships and her experiences as Shiny Luminous, she becomes more assertive and develops a stronger sense of self and purpose. In the climax of the series, she willingly sacrifices her own existence to revive the Queen, demonstrating profound courage and selflessness. However, in a testament to the bonds she formed, she is later able to separate from the Queen and return to the human world as her own independent person, finally free from her destiny and able to live a normal life with her brother.
As Shiny Luminous, Hikari possesses several notable abilities. She transforms using the Touch Commune and her signature phrase, "Luminous! Shining Stream!". Her primary weapon is the Heart Baton (or Heartiel Baton), which she uses to perform her main solo attack, Heartiel Action, which can restrict an enemy's movements. She is also able to create powerful force fields for defense, particularly after receiving the Heartiel Brooch from Lulun. Her most powerful techniques are performed together with Cure Black and Cure White. Their combined attacks include Extreme Luminario, which is later upgraded to the more powerful Extreme Luminario Max to defeat the final antagonist. In the Max Heart movies, she accesses temporary upgraded forms, including a golden-powered form and the Super Shiny Luminous form, which grants her additional power, often used to revive or empower allies.
