Description
Ayase Terada is a native Alter user from the anime Scryed Alteration I Tao, known for her connection to water and her tragic personal journey. She is a young woman who lives in the Lost Ground, a region where individuals with special powers known as Alters are common but often face prejudice from the mainland organization known as HOLY. Ayase's Alter ability is called Noble Tempest.
In her daily life, Ayase is a caring and protective individual, particularly devoted to her sickly younger brother, Akira, whom she looks after. She prefers to avoid conflict and initially keeps her powers hidden due to the fear and misunderstanding surrounding Alter users. Her primary motivation is the safety and well-being of her brother, driving many of her actions throughout the story.
Ayase has a close friendship with another native Alter user named Kunihiko Kimishima, who holds romantic feelings for her. Her first encounter with the series protagonist, Kazuma, occurs during a mission to rescue her brother and other villagers who have been captured. Though they initially clash due to personality differences, Ayase comes to see Kazuma as an upright and trustworthy person.
Her role in the story becomes critical when HOLY begins a large-scale operation to capture native Alters. During a battle, Ayase sacrifices herself to save Kimishima and is taken captive by HOLY. While imprisoned, her brother's condition worsens. The ruthless HOLY executive Kyoji Mujo exploits this situation, promising her access to better medical treatment for Akira if she agrees to undergo a brutal process that refines and greatly enhances her Alter abilities. This procedure grants her far more powerful control over water, allowing her to generate waves, whirlpools, and even trigger chemical explosions using elements within the water. However, the refinement comes at a terrible cost, severely shortening her lifespan and leaving her physically scarred.
Under duress, Ayase is sent to confront and kill Kazuma. During their battle, she displays her new, formidable powers, which are especially devastating due to their ocean-side location. However, the fight takes a tragic turn when a device on her suit monitoring her brother's vital signs indicates that Akira has died. Having sacrificed everything, including her own freedom and life, for the sake of her brother, the loss destroys her will to live. Weakened by the refinement process and overcome with grief, she dies in Kazuma's arms, apologizing for the suffering she caused him. Her death is a pivotal moment that has a profound emotional impact on Kazuma. In contrast to the anime, an alternate manga version of the story provides a much happier outcome where Ayase survives, marries Kimishima, and they have a child together.
