Description
Mimori Kiryu is the daughter of Tadanori Kiryu, a wealthy investor who serves as the primary benefactor for the organization HOLD and its elite Alter-user unit HOLY. She was born in the Lost Ground, the zone devastated by the Great Uprising, but moved away at a young age. At the beginning of the story, she returns to the Lost Ground to reunite with Ryuho, a young man she met when she was a child and who holds a significant place in her heart. At the age of seventeen or eighteen, she joins HOLY as a research scientist, making her one of the few members of the organization who is not an Alter user herself. Her primary motivation is her fascination with the Alter power, which she first witnessed when Ryuho accidentally manifested his ability in front of her, creating a small stone that she later wears as a pendant. That moment sparked a lifelong curiosity and a desire to understand the phenomenon.
Mimori is characterized by her kindness and a genuine desire to help others, traits that set her apart from many of her colleagues in HOLY. Despite coming from a privileged background connected to the mainland elite, she does not look down on the people of the Lost Ground. Instead, she becomes increasingly troubled by the harsh conditions they endure. Her compassion drives her to take action, such as when she diagnoses and treats Kanami Yuta’s illness after encountering Kazuma. She also uses her connections to uncover disturbing secrets about the Alter users and the true nature of the organization she works for. When she is discovered and imprisoned for this, Straight Cougar rescues her and urges her to leave, but she refuses, feeling too invested in the fate of the Lost Ground and in Ryuho.
Her role in the story evolves from that of a naive scientist to a determined ally of the Native Alters. She initially serves as a scientific advisor at HOLY, but her research takes a back seat as she becomes entangled in the conflict between the mainland and the Lost Ground. After a cataclysm caused by the battle between Kazuma and Ryuho, she spends eight months working with Asuka Tachibana as a smuggler, bringing supplies to the people outside the city and searching for news of Ryuho. Eventually, she finds him again and is relieved to see that the kinder side of him, which she remembered from their childhood, is reemerging after months of amnesia and a new resolve to defy HOLY.
Her key relationships are with Ryuho, who is her former flame and the person she most wants to help, and with Kazuma, whom she first encounters when he uses her as a hostage to escape a HOLY facility. Over time, she develops a more complex understanding of Kazuma’s plight and the struggles of the Native Alters. She also forms a working partnership with Asuka Tachibana and receives help from Straight Cougar. Her relationship with her father is largely defined by his position as the financial backbone of HOLY, and she eventually severs ties with the mainland to live among the people of the Lost Ground.
Mimori does not possess any supernatural abilities such as an Alter. Her notable abilities lie in her intellect and her scientific expertise, which she applies to the study of Alter power. She is resourceful, observant, and capable of medical diagnosis and treatment, as shown when she helps Kanami. Her determination and empathy become strengths that allow her to navigate a world dominated by powerful Alter users and political maneuvering. Throughout the series, she develops from a hopeful young woman looking to rekindle a lost connection into a person who chooses to make the Lost Ground her permanent home, fully committed to its people and to Ryuho.
