Description
Asuka Tachibana is a supporting character in the anime Scryed Alteration I Tao. He is sixteen years old and initially serves as a member of HOLY, the organization responsible for policing and hunting Native Alters in the Lost Ground. Despite being a resident of the impoverished inner region known as the Inners, Tachibana holds a strong personal ambition to maintain a comfortable life within the metropolis controlled by HOLY.
Tachibana presents a dual personality depending on the situation. In peaceful, everyday moments, he displays a sweet and relatively gentle demeanor. However, when a conflict or battle begins, his disposition changes entirely, becoming stern, professional, and fiercely determined. This serious exterior, however, often masks a less confident interior. Early in his career, he carried a great deal of pride in his position as a member of HOLY, a pride that was largely motivated by his relationship with his girlfriend and fiancée, Cammy.
The primary driving force behind Tachibana’s actions in the early part of his journey is a desire for recognition and a return to his former standing. This motivation turns into a bitter, unrequited rivalry with the series’ protagonist, Kazuma. After being easily defeated and humiliated by Kazuma during an escape from HOLY headquarters, Tachibana becomes obsessed with capturing him to prove his worth and reclaim his position. This defeat leads to his removal from HOLY’s ranks and a subsequent separation from Cammy, which fuels his desperation further. His role in the story evolves from that of a prideful antagonist to a reluctant ally. After interfering in another battle and becoming trapped in an underground cave with Kazuma, Tachibana is forced to cooperate with his rival. Through this experience, he gains a new understanding of Kazuma’s ideals and the perspective of the Native Alters who are simply defending their home.
Tachibana’s most significant relationship is with Kazuma. What begins as a one-sided grudge based on humiliation transforms into a mutual respect after their time spent together. A final battle between the two settles their rivalry, with Kazuma emerging victorious once more, after which Tachibana decides to abandon his old life and forge a new path. He also has a strong connection to Mimori Kiryu, another former HOLY member, and the two later work together towards the revival of the Lost Ground. His relationship with Cammy is a poignant one; he left her behind after his disgrace, but she eventually seeks him out and reunites with him, leading them to live together.
Throughout the narrative, Tachibana undergoes significant development. He starts as a character hiding behind the authority of his HOLY badge, driven by superficial pride. The humiliation of his defeats and the subsequent loss of his status and love force him to confront the weakness of his own resolve. By working alongside Kazuma, he comes to understand that his former convictions were not as strong as Kazuma’s unwavering determination to protect his home. This revelation leads Tachibana to renounce his old ways and find a new purpose, becoming a broker or smuggler who helps bridge the gap between the poor Inners and the wealthy metropolis. He dedicates himself to earning his keep through honest work rather than hiding behind an organization’s authority.
As an Alter user, Tachibana’s ability is known as Eternity Eight, also referred to as the Eight Treasure Balls. This power manifests as eight small, green, emerald-like orbs that he can control telekinetically as an extension of his will. The Eternity Eight is considered one of the most versatile Alters in the series. Tachibana can arrange the orbs in various patterns and formations to create different energy constructs, including a sword for offensive attacks, a shield for defensive purposes, or a platform to ride on for mobility. He can also use the orbs individually for precise actions. One of the most notable abilities of the Eternity Eight is its capacity for mind control. By attaching the orbs to a living target, Tachibana can manipulate their thoughts and even see through their eyes, though this effect can be resisted by individuals with exceptionally strong willpower, such as Kazuma. Later in the story, he develops a more powerful technique called the Eternity Extra Shot, which involves manifesting a bow on his wrist and firing his orbs as a single, enhanced arrow.
