Description
Mashōgun Zannin is a high-ranking demon of the Demon Tribe, serving as a general directly under the demon king Zenon. In the crossover film Mazinger Z Vs. Devilman, he is presented as the proud and ruthless leader of the demon forces, a departure from his earlier role in the Devilman television series where he was the second-in-command and the first of three demon generals. His design is distinctive, featuring a beast-like head and a second pair of eyes on his chest, and he possesses a tail that functions as a whip, a tool he uses to brutalize his enemies.

Zannin is defined by a harsh, sadistic personality and a quick temper. He harbors a particular hatred for Devilman, a hatred that surpasses his animosity toward humanity as a whole. He is deeply intolerant of failure and has been known to kill his own subordinates who retreat from battle, though he has himself fled from combat on occasion. This hypocrisy and cruelty make him deeply unpopular among his fellow demons.

His primary motivation in the film is to destroy Devilman, whom he views as a traitor to the Demon Tribe for siding with humanity. He allies with Doctor Hell, who helps free the demons from their imprisonment in the Himalayas, and together they plan to eliminate both Devilman and the pilot of Mazinger Z, Koji Kabuto. Zannin’s role in the story is that of a principal antagonist who leads the demon assault against the heroes. He personally captures Devilman after the demon is overwhelmed during an attack on the Photon Power Laboratory, torturing him by binding him to an ice cross high above the clouds as punishment for his betrayal.

Zannin’s relationship with Devilman is central to his purpose in the narrative, defined by contempt and a desire for vengeance. He works alongside fellow demons such as Sirene and Bugo, as well as the human villain Doctor Hell and his lieutenant Baron Ashura, though his alliance is one of convenience rather than trust. His interactions with the heroes are limited largely to combat and cruelty, and he shows no capacity for development or change throughout the film. He remains a static force of malice until his defeat.

In terms of abilities, Zannin possesses superhuman strength and durability, the power of flight, and a whip-like tail that he uses to inflict pain. He is also a capable leader, commanding the demon forces with an iron fist. He meets his end when Mazinger Z, equipped with the newly completed Jet Scrander, takes to the sky and destroys him along with the other demons, freeing Devilman in the process.
