Description
Herm Zoellick is a prominent antagonist in the series, serving as the Imperial Marshal and Inspector General of the Central Army for the Great Garmillas Empire. At 47 years of age in Earth years, he is a large, imposing figure who enjoys a life of luxury and excess, often surrounded by servants or attendants that highlight his ostentatious lifestyle.

Background and Personality: Zoellick hails from a powerful aristocratic family that predates the empire's current political structure, stemming from the old Garmillas Grand Duchy. This heritage has instilled in him a deep-seated belief in Garmillan pure-blood supremacy and a longing for the return of the old aristocratic order. On the surface, he is a boisterous and boastful individual, prone to theatrical speeches and showering Leader Abelt Dessler with grandiose praise, calling him a god and the Garmillas Empire undefeated. However, this public persona masks a profoundly corrupt and ambitious nature. He holds a dark, treacherous agenda and is deeply disliked by other high-ranking officers, including Admiral Gul Ditz. He also harbors a strong personal disdain for the popular and capable commander, Colonel General Elk Domel.

Motivations and Role in the Story: Zoellik's primary motivation is to seize control of the Great Garmillas Empire for himself and restore the power of the noble class that was diminished under Dessler's reign. Despite his position as the second most influential individual in the empire, he is dissatisfied with the current political system and covets the top position. To achieve this, he masterminds a treacherous plot to assassinate Leader Dessler. He arranges for Dessler's flagship to suffer a fatal reactor explosion during a secret inspection, believing the leader to be killed. He then frames his political rivals, Ditz and Domel, for the crime to remove them from power. Following the apparent assassination, Zoellik gathers a massive naval review of 10,000 ships at the Balun base, intending to announce Dessler's death and rally the fleet to march on the capital, legitimizing his coup.

Key Relationships: His most significant relationship is with Abelt Dessler, to whom he publicly pledges fanatical loyalty while secretly plotting his murder and usurpation. He despises Elk Domel, likely due to Domel's competence and popularity, and plants Gremdt Goer, a young officer serving as Domel's staff, as a spy to report on him. Similarly, he holds animosity towards Gul Ditz. His view of Miezela Celestella, a trusted aide to Dessler of non-Garmillan origin, is colored by his pure-blood ideology, leading him to openly disdain her. His relationship with Gremdt Goer is one of a patron and an assumedly loyal subordinate; he uses Goer as his tool, unaware that Goer's true loyalty lies elsewhere.

Development and Abilities: Zoellik undergoes a rapid fall from grace. His moment of perceived triumph comes when he declares himself the new leader of Garmillas. However, his coup is exposed as a carefully laid trap. Dessler, having been secretly informed of the plot and hiding aboard a submarine, survives the explosion and publicly denounces Zoellik. In an instant, the theatrical marshal is exposed as a traitor. He is shot in the back and killed by Gremdt Goer, who, after seeing Dessler alive, abandons Zoellik and ends his treachery. Regarding abilities, Zoellik's primary power lies in his political and military influence as the head of the Central Army, a vast faction loyal to him. However, his leadership during the Balun review demonstrates notable tactical incompetence; his poor command and the dense formation of his gathered fleet lead to catastrophic friendly fire and massive losses when the Earth battleship Yamato attacks. Ultimately, his overconfidence and scheming are no match for the counter-intelligence of Dessler's regime.
