Description
Analyzer Unit 09, whose full official designation is the R-9 Autonomous Type Shipborne Analysis Unit, is an advanced autonomous robot assigned to the United Nations Cosmo Navy battleship Yamato. Often referred to simply as AU-09 or by his preferred nickname, Analyzer, this unit is a uniquely modified and greatly enhanced version of the standard AU-08 robot type. His compact, non-humanoid design features a hemispherical head, two arms, and short legs ending in wide, multi-wheeled feet, with small thrusters integrated into his body for maneuverability in zero-gravity environments. While he serves as a sub-frame of the Yamato's main computer from a dedicated cradle on the ship's bridge, his duties are diverse and extend well beyond simple data processing.
The artificial intelligence that governs Analyzer operates on a highly advanced quantum computer cluster system. This sophisticated technology allows for an independent and naturally emergent personality to develop, free from artificially programmed traits. Consequently, despite his robotic monotone voice, Analyzer displays a wide range of human-like emotions through both his words and his physical gestures. He is characterized by a consistent eagerness to serve and a distinct sense of pride in his robotic abilities, which he is not above declaring superior to those of biological lifeforms. This pride, however, does not make him aloof. Analyzer collaborates effectively with the human crew, forming a particularly easy rapport with Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi. He also gradually develops a genuine friendship with Dr. Sakezo Sado, who is occasionally flustered by Analyzer's literal worldview but nonetheless comes to value his companionship.
Analyzer's role in the Yamato's voyage is critical and multifaceted. His primary functions include environmental analysis, sensor monitoring, computer operations support, and heavy labor, all of which are augmented for demanding tasks by a special exoskeleton. His technical prowess becomes a major asset in several key situations. After a captured enemy Garmilloid robot nicknamed "Alter" is brought aboard, Analyzer partners with Chief Science Officer Shiro Sanada to study and repair it. Analyzer bonds with the fellow machine, teaching it concepts and language, but is ultimately forced to permanently disable it after it escapes and attempts to sabotage the ship. This experience profoundly motivates Analyzer to begin contemplating the nature of his own existence. More practically, his work on Alter grants him a foundational understanding of Garmillas language and software systems. This knowledge proves invaluable when he and Lieutenant Niimi access the control system of a massive drill missile lodged in the Yamato, deactivate its explosives, and command it to extract itself. They later use the same insights to develop a computer virus that successfully neutralizes a battalion of invading Garmilloid soldiers.
Beyond his technical and combat support, Analyzer frequently participates in dangerous away missions. On the planet Beemela 4, he operated within his exoskeleton to clear a path through dense forest, fend off hostile wildlife, and guide a survey team through ancient ruins, where they discovered a vital wave motion energy core and an Iscandarian memory storage device. During a mission to the planet Shambleau, he even took over as pilot of the Ki-8 Stork airboat in the absence of human crew members. Throughout the later conflict with Gatlantis, Analyzer continued his duties, using a device on his back to cleanse the engine room of mind-altering "space fireflies" and later serving as a communication conduit for two ancient artificial intelligences encountered in ruins.
Analyzer's journey ends during the fierce Battle of Gatlantis. After the Yamato takes heavy fire, his physical body and software begin to fail. Dr. Sado finds him in his final moments, and Analyzer manages to thank the grieving doctor before shutting down permanently. Following his destruction, a new Analyzer unit with identical coloring is later assigned to the refitted Yamato, but Dr. Sado refuses to accept this replacement, believing it to be a poor imitation of the original. Components of the original Analyzer, retained by Dr. Sado, would regain partial functionality during a subsequent operation, broadcasting a recall message to former Yamato crew members before falling silent again, a testament to the lasting impact of this unique and loyal unit.
