Description
Baikinman is the primary antagonist from the long-running Japanese children's franchise that includes the film Soreike! Anpanman Roboly to Pokapoka Present. He is a germ who originated from Baikin Planet, having arrived on Earth as an egg that hatched on the same day as the birth of his nemesis, Anpanman. His very existence is centered on opposing the hero, as he declares that he was born to defeat Anpanman.
Physically, Baikinman is an anthropomorphic being whose design is based on a fly and is meant to evoke the image of black bread mold. He has a black, furry body, insectoid wings, antennae, a zigzag tail, large teeth, purple lips, a slimy blue tongue, and pink eyes. One of his most distinct traits is his profound weakness to soap and water, which strips away his dark coating to reveal a pure white form that significantly weakens him and can cause him to shrink.
In terms of personality, Baikinman is narcissistic, loud, impulsive, and rude, often referring to himself with the grandiose pronoun "ore-sama". He loves doing mischief and spreading germs, openly stating that cowardly tactics are his specialty. He despises cleanliness, as well as beautiful things like flowers and gems, though he has been shown to be momentarily captivated by a starry sky. He is also a glutton who frequently attempts to steal food. Despite his bravado, he is simple-minded, short-tempered, and easily tricked, often being led into traps by the provocations of others.
His primary motivation is to defeat Anpanman and cause trouble for the citizens of the world, an obsession rooted in his perceived destiny. However, his character is not purely evil. The creator of the series, Takashi Yanase, stated that Baikinman harbors a subconscious desire for a normal life, but feels constrained by the role he was born into. He is not capable of being totally evil, and there are instances where he fails to fully commit to his villainous plans or even helps his enemies when a greater threat appears. This is reflected in the philosophy of the series, where he and Anpanman are portrayed as two sides of the same coin, like light and shadow, unable to exist without each other, and their battles are never to the death.
His role in the story is to serve as the recurring source of conflict. He constantly devises new schemes, builds elaborate machines, and attacks the heroes, only to be defeated and retreat at the end of each episode with his signature catchphrase, "Bye-bye kin". Despite his repeated failures, he is incredibly resilient and always returns, much like how a person can catch a cold again after recovering. In the specific film Soreike! Anpanman Roboly to Pokapoka Present, he continues to fulfill this role as the antagonist.
Baikinman's key relationships define his actions. His relationship with Anpanman is his most important; they are fated rivals, but their dynamic includes situational cooperation. His partner is Dokin-chan, a female germ. He is completely weak to her whims and harbors unrequited romantic feelings for her, always giving in to her selfish demands even though she is in love with the hero Shokupanman. He has created several robots and allies, including Franken Robo-kun, a gentle robot he built for evil but who is too kind to fight. Baikinman avoids him because of his electrocuting hugs but also shows a reluctant, fatherly fondness for him. Another creation is Rollpanna, whom he attempted to control by planting an "evil heart" inside her, though she has since gained independence and often defies him.
Throughout the series, Baikinman has shown subtle development. Early depictions focused on his grotesque, unhygienic habits, while later episodes have shown him adopting better hygiene practices like brushing his teeth, likely to set a better example for the child audience. Specials and films have also explored alternate scenarios where he and Anpanman coexist peacefully, hinting at a potential compatibility beyond their predetermined rivalry.
Baikinman possesses several notable abilities. He is a self-proclaimed genius scientist and a skilled inventor, constructing a wide array of complex robots, vehicles, and weapons, often shaped like his own head, which he uses in his schemes. He can fly using the small wings on his back, though he prefers to use his UFO-shaped ship, the Baikin UFO. His primary weakness is his allergic reaction to cleanliness; contact with soap or sanitizing agents causes him immense pain and physical diminishment.
