Description
Pirarucu, also rendered in some materials as Pirarcu or Pirarc, is a supporting character in the 2023 animated film City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust. He is an assassin belonging to Union Teope, an international criminal mercenary organization, and serves in its specialist kill team known as Wet Work, alongside the knife-wielding Espada and the assassin Anonimo, who operates throughout the film under the alias Angie. Within that team, Pirarucu stands out as the level-headed member, the calm and composed professional who keeps his focus on the mission even when his colleagues are driven by more personal agendas.
In terms of background, Pirarucu is a veteran operative of Union Teope and a trusted subordinate of the organization's leader, a man referred to as the Mayor. He is dispatched to Tokyo together with Espada and Anonimo as part of a Wet Work deployment connected to the pursuit of Angel Dust Modified, or ADM, a nanomachine serum designed to create super soldiers. When Anonimo goes rogue, stealing the ADM and deliberately drawing close to the City Hunter Ryo Saeba, Pirarucu becomes one of the operatives tasked with recovering the serum and dealing with the traitor.
Pirarucu's personality is defined by his composure. Where Espada approaches the mission with aggression and Anonimo is consumed by her rivalry with Ryo, Pirarucu remains pragmatic and disciplined, carrying out orders with the detached professionalism of a seasoned killer. His motivations are rooted in loyalty to Union Teope and the Mayor; he does not openly challenge the mission or question his superiors. Even so, the film suggests he is not entirely cold. He understands the emotional currents running beneath the conflict, observing that both the Mayor and Anonimo are unhealthily obsessed with Ryo, the Mayor seeing Ryo as a prodigal son he hopes will return and Anonimo seeking to surpass Ryo in the eyes of her adoptive father. Pirarucu's later conduct shows that his concern for Anonimo is genuine, as he tries to steer her away from self-destruction and ultimately gives his life to protect her.
His role in the story is that of one of the film's secondary antagonists. Early on, he and Espada confront Anonimo in Tokyo, accusing her of betraying the Mayor and demanding that she hand over the stolen Angel Dust. Angie refuses, insisting that the drug corrupted the Mayor. Pirarucu later takes part in a high-speed pursuit, boarding Ryo's car in an armored vehicle with Espada and reclaiming the ADM. When the vehicle is forced off the road, Espada escapes on a motorcycle while Pirarucu continues on foot. At the waterfront climax, Pirarucu makes one final attempt to persuade Anonimo to abandon her plan to destroy Angel Dust. He fails, and when an attack helicopter opens fire, he places himself between it and Angie and is killed by the gunfire. His death allows Angie to destroy the helicopter and clears the way for her final confrontation with Ryo.
Pirarucu's most significant relationship is with the Mayor, whom he serves loyally and without visible ambition. His bond with his fellow assassin Anonimo is the most emotionally resonant element of his character; although his orders place him in the position of hunting her down, he consistently tries to dissuade her from ruin rather than merely execute her, and his sacrifice underscores that care. He works alongside Espada as a professional partner, and their styles complement each other, with Pirarucu's restraint balancing Espada's aggression. He is an adversary of Ryo Saeba, though his remarks about Ryo show that he understands the deeper history connecting Ryo, the Mayor, and Anonimo.
As the film progresses, Pirarucu develops from what initially appears to be a cold instrument of Union Teope's will into something more human. His level-headedness is gradually revealed not as indifference but as a form of control and patience, and his final act transforms him from enforcer into protector. He is the only member of Wet Work whose death is purely self-sacrificial, and his end serves as a quiet counterweight to Anonimo's fate, showing that even within the same brutal organization there could exist a man still capable of loyalty to a person rather than to an order.
In terms of abilities, Pirarucu is a highly capable operative, skilled enough to belong to the organization's elite assassination unit and to survive a violent pursuit involving police, armed mercenaries, and heavy vehicles. His competence lies less in flashy combat than in tactical presence; his defining assets are his composure, his reliability, and his ability to assess a situation clearly, qualities that make him an effective field agent. The film emphasizes his judgment and restraint over brute force, and it is ultimately that judgment, rather than any lack of skill, that leads him to place himself in harm's way for someone he was sent to hunt.
