Description
Masamune Okumura is the protagonist of 2.5 Dimensional Seduction. He is a second-year high school student and serves as the president of his school's Manga Research Club. Physically, he is an average-looking teenager with short black hair, but he is surprisingly fit, having developed a toned physique through daily exercise routines inspired by shonen manga. His background is marked by difficult family and social experiences: his mother abandoned him when he was eight years old, he was rejected by a girl he liked in grade school, and he was labeled a gross otaku by female classmates. These events led him to swear off interest in real girls and withdraw into the fictional world of anime and manga, where he developed an intense devotion to Liliel, the heroine of the fictional series Ashford Chronicles. He declares Liliel to be his waifu and considers himself a full-fledged otaku who values 2D characters above all.
Masamune has a serious, honest, and principled personality. He is true to his word and takes his commitments seriously. He is initially adamant about having no interest in three-dimensional women, but this stance is rooted in past trauma rather than genuine apathy. He is deeply sincere about his hobbies and approaches them with a dedicated, almost stoic attitude. Despite his self-imposed distance from real relationships, he is not cold or unkind; he is capable of being supportive and respectful toward others, especially when they share his passions.
His primary motivation in the story is to preserve the purity of his love for 2D characters, but his role quickly expands. When first-year student Ririsa Amano joins the Manga Research Club and reveals her desire to cosplay as Liliel, Masamune initially resists but eventually agrees to become her personal photographer. He takes this responsibility seriously, learning photography techniques from a professional named Ogino and working hard to capture the best images of her cosplays. His role evolves from a solitary otaku into a cameraman and producer for the club's cosplay activities, and he becomes a key figure in helping the girls around him express themselves through cosplay.
Key relationships include Ririsa Amano, whom he sees as a kindred spirit due to their shared love of Liliel. He forms a close bond with her, acting as her dedicated photographer and supporter, though he struggles to recognize his own growing feelings for her as more than friendship. Another important relationship is with Mikari Tachibana, his childhood friend who has harbored a crush on him for over ten years. Mikari eventually joins the club and becomes a cosplayer in an effort to get his attention, but Masamune remains oblivious to her feelings due to his past trauma and his fixation on 2D characters. He also interacts with upperclassman and club advisor Mayuri Hanyu, a former legendary cosplayer who provides him with guidance on both photography and understanding women.
Masamune undergoes significant character development throughout the series. His initial rigid rejection of the real world begins to soften as he works with Ririsa and other cosplayers. A turning point occurs during a summer trip after a convention, where he finally learns about Mikari's long-time feelings for him. Overwhelmed, he seeks advice from Mayuri, which prompts him to confront the trauma that caused him to shut out real relationships. Through these experiences, he gradually learns to accept that real people, especially those who embody his favorite characters, can be worthy of his affection and trust.
His notable abilities include a growing skill in photography, which he pursues with the same dedication he applies to his otaku interests. He also possesses surprising physical strength and endurance from his secret training routine. More broadly, his deep knowledge of manga and anime, particularly the Ashford Chronicles universe, allows him to connect with other fans and contribute meaningfully to the club's projects. His steadfast integrity and willingness to support others' passions make him a reliable and respected figure among his peers.
