Description
Alexia Midgar is the fifteen-year-old second princess of the Midgar Kingdom and a student at the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy. She is the younger sister of Iris Midgar, the first princess who is widely hailed as a genius and the strongest swordswoman in the kingdom.
In public, Alexia carries herself with the grace and elegance expected of royalty, appearing as a charming and lovely princess, a figure often described as the "high flower" of the academy. However, this polished exterior is a carefully maintained facade. Her true personality is markedly different: she is confrontational, possesses a sharp and often cruel tongue, and has a sadistic streak, sometimes looking down on those she considers beneath her. She has a habit of evaluating others by focusing on their flaws and shortcomings, operating under the belief that while strengths can be faked, weaknesses reveal a person's true nature. This cynical worldview makes her adept at seeing through pretentious individuals.
A deep-seated envy and inferiority complex toward her exceptionally talented older sister drive much of Alexia's internal conflict. Constantly compared to Iris and dismissed as the "ordinary sword," she grew to hate her own lack of talent and, for a time, her own swordsmanship. Despite this, she is a diligent and hardworking individual who continues to train. Her perspective begins to shift after she encounters the "Shadow," whose perfect and mundane swordsmanship becomes an ideal she aspires to, helping her overcome her self-loathing and take pride in her own abilities.
In the story, Alexia initially enters a fake romantic relationship with her classmate Cid Kagenou. She accepts his confession, which was intended as a punishment game, to avoid an unwanted engagement to her fiancé candidate, Zenon Griffey. She treats the relationship as a transaction, using money to command Cid, but over time she develops genuine feelings for him, becoming jealous of other women and distressed when he coolly rejects her attempt to continue their relationship after a kidnapping incident. Her primary motivation evolves from personal pride to a greater purpose following her kidnapping by the Diabolos Cult, which sought to use her royal blood for their experiments. Becoming aware of the cult's existence and the shadowy conflicts in her kingdom, she resolves to no longer be a passive observer. She joins the Crimson Knights, a new order founded by her sister, but often finds herself at odds with Iris, who becomes increasingly obsessed with the Shadow Garden. Alexia grows more sympathetic to the Shadow Garden, seeking to uncover their true intentions while secretly collaborating with Princess Rose Oriana and the author Natsume, who is secretly the Shadow Garden member Beta, despite their mutual dislike for one another.
Alexia's key relationships are complex and fraught with tension. Her relationship with her sister Iris is loving but strained by jealousy and their diverging paths regarding the cult. Her bond with Cid is central, as he is one of the few people with whom she can drop her royal persona, even as she bullies him; she sees him as a fool but finds him trustworthy, completely unaware that he is the Shadow she admires. Her interactions with Beta are a war of nerves, as both quickly see through the other's true, less-than-perfect nature.
Throughout the series, Alexia undergoes significant development. She transitions from a princess hiding her insecurities behind a mask of superiority to a proactive individual seeking to understand the conspiracies around her. After witnessing the power of Shadow and experiencing her own powerlessness, she shifts her focus from purely physical strength to acquiring a broad and comprehensive form of knowledge. She begins to study diverse fields such as government, finance, law, and ancient languages, believing that true strength and the legitimacy to act come from understanding the world beyond the sword. In terms of notable abilities, Alexia is a competent magic swordsman, though her skills are average compared to prodigies like her sister, earning her the epithet of the "ordinary sword". However, she is a dedicated practitioner who uses solid, fundamental techniques. Her greatest ability is not raw power but her sharp intuition and perceptiveness, which allow her to see through people's false fronts, a skill that paradoxically blinds her to Cid's true identity because he is so adept at faking his weaknesses.
