Description
Cid Kagenou is the protagonist of this story, a young man who embodies a very specific and deeply held fantasy. In his previous life, he was an ordinary Japanese student named Minoru Kageno, whose greatest ambition was to become an "Eminence in Shadow"—a powerful, mysterious mastermind who operates from the shadows, manipulating events and facing off against hidden evils with overwhelming coolness. This obsession ultimately led to his death, after which he was reincarnated into a world of magic and swords, where such a dream seemed finally achievable. Now the second son of a minor noble family, he dedicates every moment of his new life to realizing this goal.
Cid's personality is defined by a profound and all-consuming case of chuunibyo, a delusional grandiosity that he is entirely aware of but refuses to abandon. He lives by a strict, self-imposed code for his shadowbroker persona, which includes never operating in the light, being the strongest, and always playing a supporting role, never the main character. To the outside world, he performs the role of a completely unremarkable "mob" character—someone so utterly average and forgettable that he blends into the background and is treated with disdain by his peers. However, in secret, he transforms into Shadow, a caped, masked figure whose every word and action is designed to be the epitome of enigmatic coolness. He is not driven by traditional heroism or righteousness; his actions are fueled by a selfish desire to live out his fantasy. This makes him surprisingly cold and even sociopathic at times, as he shows little genuine interest in others and views even life-or-death struggles as part of his elaborate role-play.
His primary motivation is singular and unwavering: to become the ultimate Eminence in Shadow. All of his actions, from his grueling training to his creation of elaborate scenarios, serve this one dream. In pursuit of this, he founded Shadow Garden, a secret organization composed of young women he rescued from a condition called demon possession. He told them they were fighting a nefarious entity known as the Cult of Diablos[a]. Crucially, Cid believes he invented the Cult as part of his backstory and that the girls are merely humoring him with their dedication. The dramatic irony is that the Cult of Diablos is entirely real, and his made-up stories keep turning out to be true, a fact that is completely lost on him. He sees the members of Shadow Garden as devoted friends and followers in his game, but fails to grasp the genuine loyalty, love, and life-or-death seriousness with which they treat their mission.
Throughout the story, Cid's role is that of the hidden puppet master, though he is unaware of the true strings he pulls. In the second season, his path leads him to the chaotic Lawless City, a place ruled by three powerful monarchs, as his sister Claire drags him into a vampire-hunting expedition. His true objective is the slumbering vampire queen, Elisabeth, whom he sees as a perfect antagonist for his next act. He continues to navigate the world using his dual identities, investigating the city's criminal underbelly as the mob character Cid while unleashing his overwhelming power as Shadow when the moment is most dramatic.
Key relationships in his life are defined by his personas. His older sister, Claire, sees him as a weak and helpless younger brother who needs her protection. Princess Alexia of the Midgar Kingdom considers him a strange and puzzling individual, treating him poorly but also finding herself entangled with him. The members of Shadow Garden, particularly Alpha, its first member, can see past his facade and recognize his true nature, though they remain completely devoted to him. He also creates a multitude of other identities—such as the simple swordsman "Mundane Mann" or the suited agent "John Smith"—each serving a specific purpose in his grand performance, further obscuring his true self from the world.
While Cid's core personality remains remarkably static due to his unshakable delusions, there are subtle hints of development. The voice actor for the character notes that in the second season, viewers may see small changes in his behavior, such as hints of gratitude or guilt that suggest he is beginning to interact with others on a slightly more genuine level, revealing that he is, beneath it all, a real person. However, his primary drive remains the unfiltered pursuit of his childhood fantasy.
Cid's notable abilities are as overwhelming as his delusions. Through insane, lifelong dedication to training in both of his lives, he has achieved an almost unmatched level of magical power and physical prowess. He possesses masterful swordsmanship and can manipulate his magic with incredible precision, often using a slime bodysuit that can change shape to form his iconic combat gear and weapons. His most famous technique is "I am Atomic," a devastatingly powerful magical attack he unleashes with dramatic flair. He is so confident in his power that he never even exerts himself in a fight, and his voice actor notes that he records no heavy breathing or struggle sounds for the character, as Shadow faces every opponent with absolute, silent confidence. This combination of immense strength and unshakable conviction in his own fantasy makes him an unstoppable force who accidentally creates a real legend while simply trying to have fun.
