Maso Chiappello is a nobleman from the Oriana Kingdom who appears in the second season of The Eminence in Shadow. He holds the title of Marquis and is a major antagonist during the storyline centered on Princess Rose Oriana. Ambitious and ruthless, Chiappello conspires with Queen Reina, Rose’s mother, to seize control of the kingdom. He uses political manipulation and blackmail to force Rose into a marriage with him, aiming to become king. His personality is defined by cruelty, greed, and a willingness to betray those closest to him. He maintains a secret romantic relationship with Queen Reina, leveraging her influence to pressure Rose into compliance. In his pursuit of power, Chiappello also collaborates with the cult known as the Rounds, who provide him with a demonic entity called Ragnarok to serve as his ultimate weapon. Despite these alliances, he lacks significant combat abilities; his strength lies in his cunning, his political position, and his willingness to use hostages and deception to achieve his goals. His role in the story is to serve as the primary obstacle in Rose’s arc, forcing her to confront the corruption within her own family and kingdom. When Cid Kagenou (Shadow) investigates the palace, he uncovers the relationship between Chiappello and Reina, and reveals the truth to Rose. This revelation spurs Rose to take a decisive stand. During the wedding ceremony, Chiappello attempts to summon the demon Ragnarok, but Shadow intervenes, swiftly defeating the creature and killing Chiappello. The character does not undergo significant development; he remains a scheming, treacherous noble whose downfall is directly orchestrated by Shadow and Rose’s growing resolve.
