Description
Ah-Duo is a prominent secondary character in The Apothecary Diaries. She is introduced as the Pure Consort residing in the Garnet Palace, holding the rank of one of the four highest consorts to the Emperor. At the beginning of the story, she is thirty-five years old, making her significantly older than the other consorts, and is the Emperor's childhood friend and milk sibling, a bond that grants her a unique and influential position within the court.

In terms of appearance, Ah-Duo has long black hair and clear black eyes. Her beauty is consistently described as androgynous and gallant, often resembling that of a handsome young official rather than a traditional consort. She typically wears simple, unadorned clothing in dark tones, particularly black, which is the color associated with her elemental role as the embodiment of water among the consorts. This style enhances her boyish charm and draws admiration from both men and women. Her resemblance to the enigmatic Jinshi is notable, and observant characters like Maomao quickly notice the similarity in their features.

Ah-Duo's personality is defined by a confident, caring, and tomboyish nature. She speaks with assurance and treats the Emperor more as a close friend or even a younger brother than a lover, a dynamic rooted in their shared childhood. She is highly intelligent and possesses significant emotional strength, though she is noted to be somewhat lacking in emotional intelligence. Despite her hardships, she presents a composed and dignified exterior, but this masks a deeply private and vulnerable side; it is revealed that she spent many nights crying over the loss of her son, a sorrow she never allowed others to witness. Maomao finds her difficult to fully read, comparing her blend of keen curiosity and emotional reserve to that of Lady Gyokuyou.

The motivations and role of Ah-Duo are deeply tied to a tragic past. When the Emperor was still the crown prince, she gave birth to his first son. However, her labor coincided with that of the Empress Dowager, who was delivering the previous Emperor's child. Due to a shortage of medical staff, Ah-Duo's delivery went terribly wrong; her womb was removed to save her life, leaving her unable to bear more children. Officially, her son died in infancy. This loss, combined with her infertility, should have forced her to leave the palace, as her primary duty to produce an heir was impossible to fulfill. Nevertheless, the Emperor kept her in her position for years due to their deep personal bond. A central revelation later confirms that her son did not die. To protect him in a dangerous political environment, her child was secretly switched with the Empress Dowager's son at birth. This act means the character known as Jinshi is, in fact, Ah-Duo's biological son and the true legitimate heir to the throne.

Her key relationships are therefore the most complex and defining aspects of her character. With the Emperor, she shares a profound trust and affection, acting as his confidante and informal advisor. He continues to visit her even after she is forced to leave the inner palace, seeking her counsel on political and personal matters. Her relationship with Jinshi is the central secret of her life; she is his birth mother, though he remains unaware of this truth for most of the story. She is also deeply protective of the young consort Lishu, looking after her with a maternal care. Her head lady-in-waiting, Fengming, is fiercely loyal to her, a loyalty that tragically leads to the death of the switched imperial infant who was being raised as Ah-Duo's son.

Throughout the story, Ah-Duo undergoes a significant development. Under political pressure from powerful figures like Prime Minister Shishou, who wishes to place his own daughter in a high-ranking position, she is eventually forced out of her role as Pure Consort. She leaves the Garnet Palace with dignity, relocating to the Southern Imperial Villa. However, this move is not a defeat but a transformation of her role. From the villa, she continues to wield considerable influence, serving as a vital, non-official strategist and protector for the Emperor. She uses her new home as a safe haven, sheltering individuals who cannot live openly, including surviving members of the Shi clan.

Ah-Duo possesses several notable abilities beyond her political acumen and intelligence. She commands deep and genuine loyalty from her servants, who are willing to go to great lengths for her. Her charisma is immense, allowing her to captivate most people she meets. She also has access to significant wealth, which grants her a degree of independence and power. Her true strength, however, lies in her resilience and her capacity for pragmatic, clear-eyed decision-making, accepting the dark realities of palace life while still protecting those she cares about.
