Description
Higuare, known as Higuare the Pelagic, is a character from the anime Ishura. He is a mandrake, a sentient plant-like being, who was forced to live as a gladiator slave. His body is composed of a large, dense trunk of intertwined roots, with a humanoid shape and size. From his form extend forty-two vines or tendrils, each one armed with a poisoned dagger. His voice is described as a quiet, unsettling whisper reminiscent of rustling leaves.

His personality is stoic, reserved, and remarkably well-mannered for a creature of his violent reputation. Despite his past as a slave, he carries himself with an unusual sense of independence and inner freedom; he is obedient to those he serves but refuses to be dominated or ruled by anyone. He is a creature of few words, demonstrating a cold and efficient lethality in battle while remaining surprisingly courteous in conversation. He shows a form of gratitude for the act of fighting itself, once remarking that he had learned a new way to kill and offering thanks for the lesson.

Higuare’s background is that of a captive gladiator. Born in a distant western land unknown to the minian races, he was captured by a man who trained him to fight. He was forced into an existence defined by a simple rule: kill or die. Over many years, he fought countless battles in arenas, honing his skills against a steady stream of opponents. His abilities proved so overwhelming that he became an unstoppable champion and the city’s strongest gladiator, earning his master a fortune before he was sold to another city. His life of servitude took a turn when the army of the True Demon King attacked his city. While the human soldiers were routed, Higuare stood his ground and single-handedly slaughtered the invading forces, a feat that cemented his legendary reputation. This event ultimately led to him being scouted as a mercenary.

His primary motivation is tied to this core principle of survival through combat. He does not wish to die and exists to perfect his art of killing, approaching each battle as an opportunity to refine his technique. He is driven by the pursuit of worthy challenges, showing disdain for weak opponents while seeking battles that test his abilities to their limit.

In the story, Higuare is recruited by Taren the Guarded, a vigilante from the New Principality of Lithia, to serve as a powerful asset in her faction. He is brought to Litia by the spy Lana, alongside his companion, Shalk the Sound Slicer. Together, they act as mercenaries, patrolling the frontier and undertaking missions for Taren. During one patrol, he encounters and captures Yuno the Distant Talon, taking her back to Litia as his rider. His key relationships include his professional camaraderie with Shalk, his employer Taren, and his handler Lana. He later comes into direct conflict with other powerful Shuras, including Elea the Red Tag and Kia the World Word, whom he fights in an underground prison.

His development is limited but poignant. He begins as a simple tool for bloodsport, a slave who knew nothing but the arena. Through his encounters with Taren and the other legendary warriors, he gains a semblance of purpose beyond mere survival, becoming a free-willed mercenary who chooses his battles. His story arc concludes when he is killed by Nastique the Quiet Singer. This occurs after his use of poisonous gas inadvertently harms Kuze the Passing Disaster, prompting Nastique to eliminate him. Despite his immense power, his end is sudden, illustrating the lethal pecking order among the series’ characters.

Higuare possesses several notable abilities. His primary combat technique involves manipulating all forty-two of his tendrils simultaneously, each wielding a poisoned dagger, allowing him to strike with incredible speed and precision from a distance comparable to a bow. His years in the arena have made him a master duelist with millimeter-accurate swordsmanship. The poison coating his blades is highly toxic, capable of dissolving nerve cells and causing instantaneous death even from a superficial scratch on a living being. Beyond direct contact, he can also disperse this poison into a gaseous form, creating a deadly cloud that can affect a wide area and multiple enemies at once. This combination of range, precision, and lethal toxicity makes him a devastating threat against both single opponents and entire armies.
