OVA
Description
Rea Masaki is an artificial human created on Geminar as one of three preteen pilots designed to operate Seikijin mecha against Gaia. When the group encountered difficulties, a plan formed to send one individual to another world to bear a child combining artificial human and summoned being talents. Though another candidate was initially chosen, Rea was accidentally transported to Earth during equipment testing. She arrived near the time of Tenchi Masaki's birth or before Kiyone Masaki's pregnancy, sustaining injuries upon arrival. Kiyone Masaki found and sheltered her, learning of Rea's mission to have a child who would eventually return to Geminar. Kiyone pledged to help Rea find a partner for this purpose.

Rea was formally adopted into the Masaki family as Kiyone's younger sister. She learned cooking from Kiyone, resulting in nearly identical culinary styles despite developing some personal recipes. After Kiyone's death, Rea assumed household responsibilities for the Masaki family, including cooking and cleaning. During Kiyone's funeral, she located the young Tenchi Masaki at the cave imprisoning Ryoko, recognizing Ryoko's protective intervention when Tenchi was found unharmed in the snow. Rea later relocated with Nobuyuki Masaki to an apartment following Ryoko's release. When Katsuhito delegated the task, she reported Ryoko's infrastructure damage to authorities at the Japanese Imperial Palace.

Tenchi Masaki eventually realized he had conflated memories of his biological mother Kiyone with Rea, who fulfilled maternal duties after Kiyone's passing. This revelation occurred when Tenchi learned of Kiyone's prankster nature, contrasting with his reserved memories. Rea expressed sympathy for Kiyone, noting Tenchi's idealized perception did not match her true personality.

Rea married Nobuyuki Masaki during OVA 3 events, wearing Kiyone's wedding kimono with hopes it would pass to Kiyone's daughter Tennyo. Before the wedding, she revealed her Geminar origins and Kiyone's rescue to Washu, Ryoko, Mihoshi, and Sasami during a bath. Nearly a year later, as shown in *Tenchi Muyo! GXP*, Rea became pregnant and gave birth to Kenshi Masaki. An implanted failsafe would terminate her if she refused to send Kenshi to Geminar. OVAs 4 and 5 detail Kenshi's childhood, Rea's efforts to prevent family interference beyond training—such as blocking Washu from providing advanced mecha—and Kenshi's eventual departure to Geminar. After Kenshi's transport, the mission's mental constraints lifted, triggering Rea's emotional breakdown as she processed previously suppressed fears for her son's safety.

The spin-off *Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar* centers on Kenshi's experiences on Geminar. Unseen voices implied to include Rea and either Washu or Tokimi coordinate his arrival at the series' conclusion.

Her name combines the characters for "the tinkling of jade" (玲) and "second, Asia" (亜). Her surname Masaki means "right, proper" (正) and "tree, wood" (木). Phonetically, "Rea" resembles "Rhea," the Greco-Roman earth goddess, aligning with an earth-related naming theme in the *War on Geminar* storyline. During Kenshi's mission, Tokimi recorded his adventures for the Masaki family's viewing.
