Description
Futoshi Komaki is the team owner of the small, family-run racing team Komaki Motors, and also runs an automobile repair shop of the same name. He is the father of Kotarou Komaki and a widower, having lost his wife prior to the events of the story.

In his younger years, Futoshi was active in the world of motorsports as a member of a pit crew, where he worked alongside a driver named Sumi. However, he stepped back from that career to take over and manage the family business, the auto repair shop that would later become the foundation for his racing team. After driver Sumi died in an accident, Futoshi took in his young son, Haruka Asahina, as a lodger in his home approximately ten years ago, raising him alongside his own biological son.

As a character, Futoshi is a middle-aged man with a slightly round and friendly physique. The character designer initially drew him with a slimmer build, but the director suggested changing him to a more rounded, approachable silhouette, which reflects his warm and affable personality. Despite his current build, he often states that he was a very fast runner in his youth. He is a kind and passionate individual, a stark contrast to the more cutthroat environment that can exist in professional racing. He provides a stable, fatherly presence, supporting the family business and the young men in his care with a deep sense of warmth. He has told Haruka that the money the young driver contributes from his newspaper delivery job is unnecessary, emphasizing that Haruka is considered part of the family, not a source of income.

Within the story of Komaki Motors, Futoshi serves as the anchor. He owns the car and the operation, but more than that, his personal history is deeply intertwined with the team's present. His regret over retiring from racing to take over the family business and the pain of losing his former partner, Sumi, are underlying motivations for his current role. He is not simply running a team; he is cultivating the talent of his mechanic son, Kotarou, and providing a home and a platform for his young driver, Haruka, to finally be recognized for his skills. His ultimate goal is not just to win, but to help the people around him succeed. A key relationship is with the freelance photographer Kouya Madoka, whom Futoshi enthusiastically draws into the world of Formula 4, explaining the sport’s nuances and his team’s personal struggles, which inspires Madoka to become the team’s sponsor. The relationship between Futoshi, his son, and Haruka forms a close-knit, unconventional family unit that is the emotional core of the racing team. Futoshi has no notable driving abilities of his own anymore, but he possesses a profound understanding of the sport from his time on the pit crew and a deep capacity for kindness and mentorship that defines his role as a team owner and father figure.
