Description
Dr. Cardo Nabo is the head researcher of the Vanadis Institute and a central figure in the development of the GUND Format technology. As a leading proponent of the GUND Format theory, she commands deep respect from her fellow researchers, including her student Elnora Samaya. Physically, Dr. Nabo has a prosthetic left eye and a cranial implant, reflecting her own use of the technology she helped pioneer. Her appearance is that of an older woman, and she is often seen as a maternal presence within the institute.

Dr. Nabo's personality is defined by a blend of scientific dedication and profound compassion. She is a motherly scientist who cares deeply for those working under her, treating the Gundam Lfrith as if it were her own child. This nurturing nature extends to her role as a mother figure for Elnora and a grandmother figure for Elnora's daughter, Ericht, who affectionately calls her Granny. Despite her warmth, she is also a principled and pragmatic hero. She firmly believes that for humanity to survive and thrive in the harsh environment of space, people must augment their bodies with technology like the GUND Format, comparing it to an infant needing clothes for protection. This belief drives her work; the central purpose of her research was always medical and transhumanist, aimed at compensating for the human body's fragility in space, not just military application.

Her motivations are rooted in the conviction that GUND technology is a necessary evolution for mankind. She sought to expand human rights to life in space, holding that it could reconcile divisions between Earth and space. To secure funding for her medical research, she partnered with the Ochs Earth corporation, which repurposed the technology for their Gundam mobile suits. However, Dr. Nabo held firm ethical standards, notably rejecting the school of thought that would later lead to the development of Enhanced Humans to withstand the data storms caused by the GUND Format.

In the narrative of the prologue, Dr. Nabo plays a pivotal role. She is seen overseeing the test of the Gundam Lfrith, where she has to rein in Elnora's reckless impatience, prioritizing the pilot's safety over the test's objectives. Her most significant action comes when she comforts a lonely Ericht, who feels ignored by her parents on her birthday. Dr. Nabo brings the child into the Lfrith's cockpit and registers her with the mobile suit by placing her hand on a panel, a seemingly kind gesture that has enormous consequences. When the Mobile Suit Development Council launches a lethal raid on the Vanadis Institute's facility at Fólkvangr, Dr. Nabo meets her end with defiance. As the assault unit commander enters her office to execute her, she is surrounded by images of what GUND technology has done for medicine. She declares GUND a necessity for humanity's future in space. When her words are dismissed as an excuse, she defiantly aims her pistol at her assassins, unwilling to go quietly.

Her key relationships are primarily familial. She is the mentor and surrogate mother to Elnora Samaya, having saved Elnora's life after an accident cost the younger woman her right arm. She also shares a close bond with Elnora's daughter, Ericht, treating her like a granddaughter. Her other relationships include her colleagues at the Vanadis Institute, who trust and respect her as the heart of their organization.

Dr. Nabo's development is largely static within the prologue, as her death occurs at its climax. However, her influence continues to drive the series' plot long after her passing. Her act of registering Ericht with the Lfrith inadvertently makes the child the only person capable of piloting it, leading to Elnora and Ericht being the sole survivors of the massacre. This event sets the stage for Elnora's transformation into Prospera and her quest for revenge. Her legacy persists as other characters in the main series investigate her research for its original, intended goal. Her final defiance underscores her unwavering commitment to her ideals, arguing that the council was not just killing her, but destroying the future that GUND could have saved.

In terms of notable abilities, Dr. Nabo's primary strength is her intellectual prowess as the foremost authority on the GUND Format theory. She possesses extensive knowledge of Permet link connections and mobile suit development. Beyond her scientific expertise, she demonstrates a notable physical ability in her final moments by drawing a firearm to resist armed soldiers, showing a willingness to fight for her beliefs even when death is certain. Her most profound influence, however, comes from her foresight and personal actions, which create the conditions for the entire subsequent conflict.
