Description
Olcott is a character from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He serves as the mobile suit team commander of the Dawn of Fold, an Earth-based resistance organization that opposes the rule of the Spacian-dominated Benerit Group and carries out guerrilla operations against it. Within the resistance, he is a veteran warrior whose skill and steadiness have earned him the trust of both the organization's leader, Naji Geor Hija, and the soldiers under his command.
His real name is Ridrick Kruger. Before joining the Dawn of Fold, he was a member of Dominicus, a special forces unit tasked with hunting down banned mobile suit technology, and he built a long career there as a veteran mobile suit pilot with his own sense of justice. His life was marked by tragedy when his son was killed during an attack by Earthians. In the aftermath of that loss, Olcott cast aside his personal attachments along with his real name, and he eventually came to fight on behalf of Earthians, the very people who had once taken everything from him. Over time, much of his body has been replaced with artificial parts that rely on GUND technology.
In personality, Olcott often appears friendly, but he keeps an emotional distance from nearly everyone around him. He treats people, including members of his own unit such as the young pilots Norea Du Noc and Sophie Pulone, with formal courtesy and little personal warmth. He tends to judge people mainly by how useful they are to a mission, reflecting the hardened, mission-focused outlook he adopted after abandoning his former life.
In the story, Olcott commands the Dawn of Fold's mobile suit squad and takes part in its major operations, including the resistance's attack on Plant Quetta. He later captures Guel Jeturk, the former heir of the Jeturk corporation, and holds him as a prisoner while the Dawn of Fold attempts to use the situation to its advantage. When the Benerit Group's garrison forces assault the resistance's hideout, Olcott is forced to evacuate along with the rest of the group. An episode centered on his past reveals how a former Spacian elite soldier came to fight for an Earthian resistance movement, giving fuller context to his restrained and detached behavior.
As a pilot, Olcott is highly capable even when operating older or low-performance mobile suits, and he can hold his own against newer machines, a sign of his extensive combat experience. His leadership is dependable, and he remains a respected figure within the Dawn of Fold through the turmoil of the ongoing conflict.
