Description
Ame is the son of Hana and the Wolf Man, and the younger brother of Yuki. He was born on a rainy day, which is the inspiration for his name, which means rain in Japanese. As a child of a human and a werewolf, Ame inherits the ability to transform between human and wolf forms at will, a trait that shapes his entire life and the central conflict of his identity.

As a young child, Ame is notably timid and shy, presenting a stark contrast to his outgoing and adventurous older sister. He prefers to stay close to his mother, Hana, and is fearful of the outside world, often hiding behind his sister for protection. This reserved nature continues as he grows, and he struggles significantly in social environments like school. There, he is depicted as lonely and withdrawn, sitting in the back of the class without participating and frequently skipping school to stay at home or explore the nearby nature reservation with his mother. His quiet demeanor also makes him a target for bullies, from whom Yuki often has to protect him.

As Ame approaches the age of ten, his personality undergoes a significant transformation as his wolf instincts begin to awaken and intensify. The timid boy becomes more adventurous, bold, and wild, displaying wolf-like behaviors such as chasing prey and spending extensive time alone in the woods. This shift marks the beginning of his deep fascination with the natural world. His growing interest in the mountain ecosystem is fostered by a wise old fox he calls Sensei, who teaches him about the wild and its inhabitants. Ame comes to deeply admire Sensei and aspires to learn from him, eventually seeing the forest not as a place of fear but as one where he truly belongs. His internal struggle is no longer about overcoming fear but about choosing which side of his heritage to embrace.

Ame's central motivation becomes the pursuit of his wolf identity and his place in the natural world. He feels no connection to human society, which he finds difficult and unwelcoming, and instead discovers a sense of purpose and belonging in the wild. This leads him to a profound conflict with his sister, Yuki, who at the same time is striving to live fully as a human. Their divergent paths result in a fierce physical confrontation in their wolf forms, where Ame's awakened wild instincts prove dominant. Following this, during a heavy rainstorm, he makes the definitive choice to abandon his human life and become the new guardian of the mountain, a role previously held by his mentor, Sensei. In a pivotal scene, he leads his unconscious mother, who had gone looking for him, to safety before transforming into a powerful adult wolf and disappearing into the forest, letting out a long, final howl.

His relationship with his mother, Hana, is the emotional anchor of his story. As a child, he is deeply attached to her, but his growing independence creates a painful tension. Hana struggles to accept his choice to live as a wolf, fearing for his safety, but ultimately learns to trust his decision and lets him go. His relationship with Yuki is complex, evolving from a typical sibling dynamic where she teases him for being weak, to one of protector and protected, and finally to a rift caused by their opposing life choices. Although they fight bitterly, their bond is a key driver of the film's exploration of identity.

Notably, Ame has the ability to transform into a wolf, a power that he can use partially or fully. His physical appearance changes as he matures; in his human form, his hair darkens from blue to black, and his eyes change from hazel to brown. His wolf form matures as well, from a pale, cream-colored pup to a large, majestic adult wolf with a striking resemblance to his father, featuring a pale gray and white coat with a blue-tinged mane. Even in his wolf form, he retains the cognitive abilities of a human, including the capacity to understand language, though he loses the ability to speak. At the end of his journey, at only ten years old, Ame fully embraces his wolf heritage and chooses to live in the wild, having matured at the accelerated pace of a wolf while forging his own unique path.
