Description
Mimori Kiryuu is a young woman in her late teens who serves as a research scientist for HOLY, the elite Alter-user unit operating within the larger HOLD organization. She is the daughter of Tadanori Kiryuu, a wealthy investor who serves as the main financial backer of both HOLD and HOLY. Despite her privileged background on the Mainland, Mimori was born in the Lost Ground and moved away at a young age. As a child, she was taken to the Lost Ground to become acquainted with the region, and there she met a shy young boy named Ryuho. When Ryuho inadvertently activated his Alter power out of fear, a piece of a column vanished and left a crude triangular stone on the ground between them. Unlike most people, Mimori was not frightened; she was fascinated by the Alter phenomenon. She kept that stone as a keepsake and wears it as a pendant throughout the story.

Mimori shows exceptional intellectual ability, graduating from college and completing graduate school by the age of eighteen. She joins HOLY as a research scientist, making her the only member of the unit who does not possess an Alter power. Her primary motivation is to reunite with Ryuho, with whom she shares an unresolved romantic past, and to understand the deeper truths about Alter users and the Lost Ground. Despite her sheltered upbringing, Mimori is kind-hearted, empathetic, and genuinely wants to help others. Her compassion sets her apart from many of those around her in the harsh environment of the Lost Ground.

Early in the narrative, she arrives in the Lost Ground and experiences a jarring introduction when Kazuma uses the wing of her airplane as a jumping-off point during a rescue operation. After arriving at HOLY headquarters, she is initially placed in a supporting role as a researcher, but her duties are frequently sidetracked by her personal concerns. She is deeply unsettled by how much Ryuho has changed—he has become cold and distant—and she hopes to bring back the kinder person she once knew. This puts her in subtle conflict with Scheris, who also has romantic interest in Ryuho. As she gains access to the Lost Ground outside HOLY’s base, Mimori discovers the harsh living conditions of the Inners, the native residents of the Lost Ground. When she encounters Kazuma again, she sees his desperation over his friend Kanami’s illness. Mimori is able to diagnose and treat Kanami, earning Kazuma’s gratitude and demonstrating her medical and scientific skills.

As Mimori becomes more involved in the reality of the Lost Ground, she uses her family connections to uncover disturbing secrets about the Alter users and HOLD’s true intentions. She is discovered and imprisoned, but is rescued by Straight Cougar. Despite being urged to leave the Lost Ground, she refuses, feeling a strong attachment to the people there and especially to Ryuho. She later allies with Asuka Tachibana, a former HOLY member, and works as a smuggler for eight months, bringing supplies from the city to the Lost Ground while waiting for news of Ryuho. Her persistence pays off when she finally locates him and finds that his amnesia and changed circumstances have allowed a gentler side of him to resurface.

Through these experiences, Mimori undergoes significant personal development. She transitions from a naive, sheltered scientist into a determined and independent figure who actively challenges the system she was once part of. She chooses to sever all ties with the Mainland and permanently live in the Lost Ground as an Inner, fully embracing the community she has come to care for. Her key relationships include her enduring bond with Ryuho, her evolving mutual respect with Kazuma, and her strained connection with her father Tadanori, whose financial power shapes the political landscape of the Lost Ground.

Mimori’s notable abilities lie not in combat but in her intellect and empathy. She is a skilled scientific researcher specialized in Alter studies, a capable medical diagnostician, and possesses a natural ability to sense the emotions and intentions of others. Her courage and moral conviction allow her to stand up for what she believes is right, even when it means putting herself at risk. Throughout the story, she serves as a bridge between the scientific world of the Mainland and the raw, chaotic reality of the Lost Ground, ultimately choosing the latter as her true home.
