TV-Series
Description
Kiyoshi Tanaka is a sumo wrestler belonging to the same stable as the protagonist, Matsutaro Sakaguchi. His background is modest; he originally comes from the Senboku District in Akita Prefecture, where he lived with his large family of eight before moving to Tokyo to pursue sumo. Outside of wrestling, Tanaka has a talent for playing shogi and fishing.
In terms of personality, Tanaka is characterized by an extremely shy, introverted, and sensitive nature. He speaks very little, a habit rooted in his mother's criticism that he spoke with a strong regional accent, which made him self-conscious. This timid demeanor is a defining trait, and he is easily brought to tears, even crying during his first conversation with Matsutaro. His lack of confidence and gentle disposition make him a stark contrast to the boisterous and aggressive Matsutaro. However, Tanaka has a notable and dramatic behavioral trigger. When frightened or, in some versions of the story, when he drinks alcohol, his entire personality transforms. He becomes exuberant, loses his inhibitions, and willingly participates in the reckless pranks and schemes that Matsutaro devises.
His primary motivation is to succeed as a sumo wrestler, though this goal is constantly challenged by his own insecurities. Unlike the naturally gifted Matsutaro, Tanaka struggles intensely with the sport. He experiences significant anxiety before matches and possesses low self-esteem regarding his abilities. His role in the story is that of a loyal companion and a foil to Matsutaro. Tanaka is often dragged into Matsutaro's chaotic plans, acting as a reluctant but eventually willing accomplice. Despite their contrasting personalities, he forms a crucial bond with Matsutaro. The stable master, Raijin, even tasks Tanaka with keeping an eye on the rowdy newcomer. The relationship is a classic pairing of a sensitive guy and a manly man, with Tanaka following Matsutaro with unwavering, almost dog-like loyalty.
Key relationships define much of his story. His friendship with Matsutaro is central; he is often the voice of reason or the worried companion, but he is also the one who can reach Matsutaro in a way others cannot. In a pivotal moment, after Matsutaro is rejected by his love interest, Reiko Minami, Tanaka delivers a passionate, angry speech that snaps Matsutaro out of his self-destructive despair. Ironically, Tanaka also secretly shares Matsutaro’s romantic feelings for Reiko.
Tanaka undergoes a clear development arc focused on his sumo career. He starts as a wrestler who cannot secure a win, suffering from a three-match losing streak and nearly driving himself to despair, believing he is not cut out for the sport. His debut match is a disaster; his uncontrolled movements cause him to tumble out of the ring. His fellow wrestlers note that he is too tense, and his master advises him to visualize success rather than dwell on his failures. After significant struggle, his fourth match results in a narrow first victory, a critical milestone that represents his hard-won growth. While Matsutaro rockets to success, Tanaka’s progress is slow and fraught with difficulty, constantly overshadowed by his friend's dominance. At one point, Matsutaro, worried that Tanaka will never get strong enough to make a living in sumo, suggests he open a chanko (sumo stew) restaurant to secure his future.
Regarding notable abilities, on the sumo dohyo, Tanaka is not portrayed as a powerful or skilled wrestler. His physical build is smaller than average for a sumo athlete, which puts him at a further disadvantage. His most remarkable ability is his aforementioned personality shift. This transformation, triggered by alcohol or extreme fear, turns the timid weakling into an enthusiastic and fearless participant, making him a surprisingly effective partner in Matsutaro’s chaos. The fear of ghosts, for instance, is something that can trigger his frantic energy. This duality is his most defining and notable characteristic within the series.
