Description
Marie Fou Lafan is a central figure in Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs, introduced as the daughter of a viscount family within the otome game world of the Holfort Kingdom. Her background is unique among the cast: she is a reincarnator from modern Japan, and it is eventually revealed that she is the younger sister of the protagonist Leon Fou Bartfort from their previous lives. In her original life, she was the one who forced Leon to play the otome game that serves as the setting for the story. After she was disowned in her past life under circumstances that led to her death, she was reborn into the impoverished and debt-ridden Fou Lafan viscount family. This background defines her primary motivation: a desperate desire to escape poverty and secure a life of luxury and stability. She initially attempts to achieve this by manipulating the game's original storyline, targeting the prince Julius and his entourage in order to claim the role of the otome game’s protagonist for herself, thereby securing her financial and social future.

Personality-wise, Marie is calculating, selfish, and manipulative, unafraid to use others for her own gain. She is also pragmatic and resourceful, displaying a sharp financial sense that makes her deeply resentful of the prince's entourage's reckless spending and poor management, which constantly drags her back toward poverty after she becomes involved with them. Behind her scheming exterior, however, she demonstrates a capacity for genuine care, particularly after being reunited with her brother. She has shown concern for characters such as Carla and Noelle, and once reconciled with Leon, she evolves into a valuable support role, gathering information and working as a sidekick. Her relationship with Leon is the most significant in the story. Initially, they are wary rivals and sworn enemies, each knowing the other is a reincarnator but concealing their familial connection from the world. Over time, they form a reluctant alliance, and in the alternate timeline explored in the Marie Route side story, their bond deepens into a complex partnership built on mutual understanding and protection, with Marie taking on a more cooperative and even protective role.

In the main story, Marie serves as a key antagonist and foil to Leon, actively scheming to maintain her grip on the prince and the social advantages she has secured. Her schemes often put her in direct conflict with Leon, who uses his own game knowledge to thwart her plans. Despite this, her presence drives much of the early plot and reveals the hidden layers of the otome game world. In the Marie Route, her role shifts to co-protagonist, and she and Leon work together as mob characters attempting to survive the world's dangers and political upheavals without drawing the spotlight. Her development is marked by a gradual shift from pure self-interest to a willingness to collaborate and even sacrifice for those she cares about, especially Leon. Notable abilities include her extensive knowledge of the otome game's mechanics and characters from her past life, which she leverages for manipulation and planning, as well as her growing competence in gathering intelligence and navigating the world's political and social intricacies. After her reconciliation with Leon, she also becomes a capable partner in strategic efforts, such as attempting to avert war and dealing with hidden threats like the spirit of the Saint.
