Description
Oh-Etsu Nimaiya is a member of the Royal Guard, also known as the Zero Division, and holds the positions of Third Officer of the Zero Division and Divine General of the West. He carries the title Sword God because he is the inventor of the Zanpakutō and the creator of every Asauchi, the blank swords from which all Shinigami Zanpakutō are born. He has lived for more than two thousand years and works within his own domain in the Soul King Palace, where he forges swords and oversees their creation. In appearance, he is a dark-skinned man with thick black hair that is shaven and dyed green on the sides of the head, and he wears a variation of the standard Shinigami shihakushō, featuring a green undergarment and a shortened hakama that leaves his lower legs exposed.
Nimaiya has a lively, energetic, and theatrical personality. He is prone to grandiose entrances and greetings, speaks in a casual and hip-hop-influenced manner, and tends to exaggerate his own image. Fellow Royal Guard member Kirio Hikifune describes him as unpredictable. Beneath his flippant and brash exterior, he is quick-witted, resolute, and completely serious when the situation calls for it. He takes great pride in his craftsmanship and refers to himself as the number one Zanpakutō creator, and he retains his cheerful demeanor even during battle. When fighting, he is efficient and merciless, favoring swift and decisive strikes over prolonged exchanges.
His motivations are rooted in his identity as the forger of all Zanpakutō and in his duty as a protector of the Soul King. He operates according to a craftsman's strict standards, which is best shown in his relationship with his own blade. Sayafushi is his creation, but he regards it as a failure because it is too sharp and too smooth. The blade never chips, dulls, or holds blood, and as a result no sheath can contain it. For Nimaiya, a sword that cannot be sheathed fails the basic definition of a sword, so he keeps Sayafushi suspended in a vat of jelly when it is not being used.
In the story, he becomes directly involved when Ichigo Kurosaki and Renji Abarai arrive in the Soul King Palace for training. He greets them with a prank and introduces them to the women living in his domain, who are later revealed to be Zanpakutō he has created, living weapons with their own will and consciousness. He forges new blades for Ichigo and Renji, repairing and replacing their broken Zanpakutō, and he provides Ichigo with insight into the nature of his sword. When the Quincy elite guard known as the Schutzstaffel invades the Soul King Palace, Nimaiya confronts them and swiftly cuts down several of them with Sayafushi. The enemies are later restored by Yhwach's Auswählen, and Nimaiya is badly wounded in his attempt to defeat the restored Lille Barro. After Askin Nakk Le Vaar uses his ability to make the blood inside Nimaiya's body lethal, Nimaiya cuts his own throat so the poisoned blood can drain out, and Tenjiro Kirinji later replaces his blood to keep him alive.
His relationships are shaped by his work and his rank. With Ichigo and Renji, he acts as an effective if demanding teacher and smith, and he treats the Zanpakutō he has made with a craftsman's affection. He works alongside the other members of the Zero Division, and Kirinji in particular intervenes to save him after his injury. His primary opposition in the arc comes from the Schutzstaffel, especially Lille Barro and Askin Nakk Le Vaar, against whom he demonstrates both his strength and his limits.
His development across this portion of the story highlights the contrast between his playful public persona and his seriousness as a warrior. He adapts quickly to changing circumstances and makes hard practical choices when necessary, such as wounding himself to survive Askin's ability. His actions reinforce his standing as one of the highest-ranking defenders of the Soul King, a craftsman who will face the strongest of enemies directly when his duty demands it.
In terms of abilities, Nimaiya possesses immense spiritual power appropriate to a member of the Royal Guard, along with extraordinary swordsmanship built around speed and single decisive killing blows. Sayafushi allows him to cut through almost anything without dulling, and he can fight effectively while treating the blade with controlled care. His greatest talent, however, is his ability to forge, repair, and reforge Zanpakutō, including creating swords that develop their own consciousness. He also knows the location and history of every Zanpakutō he has ever created, giving him a unique connection to the weapons of all Shinigami.
