Description
Ōetsu Nimaiya, also rendered Ouetsu Nimaya, is a member of the Royal Guard known as the Zero Division in the Thousand-Year Blood War story arc. He holds the title God of the Sword and the position of Third Officer of the Zero Division, along with the designation Divine General of the West. He is recognized throughout Soul Society as the inventor of the Zanpakutō, the weapon used by Shinigami, and as the craftsman who personally forged every Asauchi, the blank sword that gradually becomes a Shinigami's individual Zanpakutō. Because his invention was considered essential to the protection of Soul Society by the Soul King, he was elevated into the Royal Guard. Since the founding of Soul Society, no Shinigami has awakened a Zanpakutō without using one of his Asauchi; the notable exception among those who trained with him was Ichigo Kurosaki, whose original blade was not one of Nimaiya's creations. Nimaiya later forged a new sword for Ichigo during the training that took place in the Royal Palace.
In appearance, Nimaiya is a dark-skinned man with thick black hair that is shaven and dyed green on the sides of his head, giving him a distinctive reggae-influenced look. Standing against the Schutzstaffel, the elite personal guard of the Quincy, he single-handedly cuts down three of its members: Gerard Valkyrie, Pernida, and Lille Barro. When he then faces Askin Nakk Le Vaar, whose Deathdealing ability makes Nimaiya's own blood toxic to him, he reacts by slitting his own throat and relying on fellow Zero Division member Tenjiro Kirinji to replace his blood, which allows him to overcome that opponent as well. He is ultimately defeated when Yhwach's Auswählen revives and empowers the fallen Quincy, and an invigorated Lille Barro badly injures him.
Nimaiya's key relationships are defined by his position within the Royal Guard.
