Description
Kat is the main protagonist of Gravity Rush: The Animation - Overture, a young woman whose past is shrouded in mystery. Before the events of the Overture, she fell from the floating kingdom of Eto to the city of Hekseville, an event that cost her her memories and her identity as the former Queen Alua. She awoke in the city with no recollection of her previous life, accompanied only by a mysterious, cat-like creature she would come to name Dusty. This creature granted her the extraordinary power to manipulate gravity. Following these events, Kat fully embraced a new role as the heroic protector of Hekseville, a figure the public affectionately came to know as the Gravity Queen. The Overture animation specifically serves as a bridge between her early adventures and the subsequent challenges she would face, finding her enjoying a moment of peace before new threats emerge.

In terms of personality, Kat is defined by her selflessness, optimism, and down-to-earth nature. She does not seek fame or recognition for her heroic acts; rather, she helps others purely because she genuinely wants to. Despite carrying the weight of her lost memories, she rarely broods over her past, choosing instead to focus on the present and the people she can assist. Kat is naturally curious, independent, and possesses a strong will, which gives her a great deal of emotional strength when confronting danger. She is generally upbeat and cheerful, though this is balanced by a streak of dry humor and a bit of a mischievous side. She can also be somewhat naive and foolhardy, often leaping into action without fully thinking through the consequences. The Overture animation highlights a more playful and food-loving aspect of her personality, where she is shown spending her money on snacks and even expressing dismay over a lost meat skewer during a monster attack.

Kat's primary motivation is a deep-seated sense of justice and a desire to protect those in need. She feels a strong personal responsibility to use her abilities for the good of others, and her actions are always driven by altruism rather than personal gain. In Gravity Rush: The Animation - Overture, her motivation is tested as she investigates mysterious gravity disturbances alongside her former rival, Raven. Her drive is not just about fighting monsters but also about ensuring the safety of her home and unraveling the strange events that threaten it, setting the stage for her journey in the sequel.

In the story of the Overture, Kat serves as the central figure bridging the narrative gap between the first and second games. The two-part OVA shows her enjoying the sights and snacks of the floating city of Jirga Para Lhao when she and Raven are attacked by Nevi, the mysterious creatures that threaten their world. Later, they respond to an alarm about a gravity disturbance at Neu Hiraleon, where they confront strange cyborgs. After a fight, the cyborgs self-destruct, sending Kat and her friend Syd into a gravity storm and to an uncharted location, which directly sets up the plot for Gravity Rush 2. Her role is that of an active, if somewhat unaware, catalyst for the next chapter of the story.

Key relationships are central to Kat's character. Her closest and most important bond is with Dusty, the cat-like entity who is not only her companion but also the source of her gravity-manipulating powers. Dusty is her most trusted friend, and her abilities are entirely dependent on his health and presence. Another crucial relationship is with Raven, a fellow gravity shifter who began as a bitter rival but grew into a close friend and ally. The Overture shows them cooperating effectively, with Kat's carefree and emotional nature complementing Raven's more serious and by-the-book attitude. She is also close with Syd, a police officer who provides her with support and information and consistently acts as a reliable friend, accompanying her into danger during the Overture's climax.

Throughout the Gravity Rush series leading up to and including the Overture, Kat shows remarkable consistency in her core values, even as her circumstances change. Her development is less about a fundamental shift in personality and more about a gradual acceptance of her heroic role and a deepening of her relationships. She begins as an amnesiac girl discovering her powers and grows into a confident and respected protector. She learns to trust others, such as Raven, and to work as part of a team. Even when separated from her allies, as she is at the end of the Overture, she remains determined and resourceful, ready to face whatever comes next.

As a gravity shifter, Kat possesses a range of notable abilities all tied to her companion Dusty. She can "shift" gravity, effectively changing its effect on her body to walk on walls, hang from ceilings, or fall in any direction she chooses, which gives her the power of flight. Her primary combat move is the Gravity Kick, where she launches herself at enemies feet-first, adding the force of gravity to her attacks for a powerful strike. She can also generate a static field that allows her to levitate and launch heavy objects, making her a formidable fighter despite her scrawny appearance. However, these powers come with significant weaknesses. They are entirely reliant on Dusty; if she is separated from him or if he is incapacitated, she loses her abilities entirely.
