TV-Series
Description
Jean du Vix is a character from the anime and light novel series Reincarnated as a Sword. He is a demon necromancer of considerable power, holding an official B-rank as an adventurer under the Alessa Adventurer's Guild, though his tactical abilities in large-scale combat are considered on par with an A-rank during times of war. At forty-nine years old, his appearance is distinct and somewhat intimidating, featuring sharper than average nails and teeth, and he is often depicted wearing a dark robe adorned with skulls on each shoulder while carrying a staff.

Despite a shady and somewhat villainous appearance, Jean du Vix possesses a complex personality that defies simple categorization. He projects the manner of a classic anime antagonist, complete with maniacal laughter and overly elaborate, esoteric explanations for his actions. He enjoys being the one to dispense knowledge, even when his verbose commentaries try the patience of those around him. Beneath this flamboyant and sinister exterior, however, he is genuinely caring and affectionate toward those he considers his allies, a trait notably demonstrated in his interactions with his own summoned creatures. He is also described as having a bold, open-hearted, and intellectual nature, constantly seeking new knowledge and engaging with the world as an explorer.

His background is steeped in military history. Jean earned his fearsome epithet, the Slaughterfield or Massacre, by single-handedly repelling an invasion from the hostile nation of Raydoss years prior to the main story. He accomplished this by raising the undead from both his own fallen comrades and enemy soldiers, turning the tide of battle with a massive army of the living dead. This feat cemented his reputation, and he is often stationed near Granzell's northern border as part of the kingdom's ongoing defense efforts. On a personal level, he once attempted to conquer a dungeon located on a floating island but was overwhelmed and forced to retreat, an endeavor that hints at his ambition as an explorer.

Within the narrative, Jean du Vix serves as a powerful and initially intimidating figure who crosses paths with the protagonists Fran and her sentient sword known as Teacher. His role is cemented by his unique ability, Soul's Eye, a special skill which allows him to perceive the true nature of others. This power makes him one of only a very few individuals who can discern that Teacher is not merely a magical weapon but a reincarnated being with a human soul, allowing him to recognize the sword's true identity. He resides a considerable distance from the city of Alessa, living as a recluse, which contributes to his mystique.

One of his most significant and defining relationships is with the A-rank adventurer Amanda. While they share a mutual respect as high-level colleagues, their dynamic is characterized by a deeply antagonistic and one-sided power struggle. Amanda frequently exploits Jean's infamy and power, forcing him to take on her assigned missions whenever she leaves Alessa. She typically enforces this by threatening to destroy his house if he refuses to comply, leading Jean to live in a state of genuine fear and exasperation at the mere mention of her name. This relationship highlights a more comedic and vulnerable side to his character.

In terms of development and abilities, Jean du Vix is already a fully realized and highly skilled master of his craft when he is introduced. He is a Dark Master with immense magical reserves, particularly in Mana Points, and possesses a vast array of skills centered on death and darkness. His primary abilities include Necromancy, Spectremancy, and Spectre Control, which allow him to summon and command the undead, as well as powerful Dark Magic. He also has notable proficiency in Appraisal, Compounding, Toxicology, and Staff Arts, making him a versatile combatant and a skilled apothecary capable of creating potent potions. He also possesses the Complete Presence Concealment skill, allowing him to be stealthy when required. His high crowd-control capabilities and strategic value in warfare make him a unique asset who is treated as more dangerous than his official rank suggests, with the kingdom of Raydoss fearing him more than most other adventurers in Granzell. Jean du Vix is introduced in the final episode of the first anime season as a new and formidable presence on the floating island, setting up a future confrontation.
