Description
Professor Ikebukuro is a supporting character from the 2023 animated film Shin Jigen! Crayon Shin-chan the Movie. He serves as an advisor to the International Esper Adjustment Committee, an organization concerned with people who develop psychic powers. When a mysterious white light from space grants kindergartner Shinnosuke Nohara and his younger sister Himawari telekinetic abilities, Professor Ikebukuro visits the Nohara family home in Kasukabe to locate the newly awakened espers. The manga extra chapter that inspired the film, Shin-chan and Himawari: Psychic Siblings, includes a figure in a similar advisory position, and the film expands that role into the character of Professor Ikebukuro.
As a person, he comes across as a knowledgeable but informal authority figure. He has a playful side, occasionally switching between regional Japanese dialects to make his predictions more entertaining, and he is particular about classic cars. These habits give him an eccentric, lighthearted quality that contrasts with the serious nature of the psychic crisis unfolding around him.
His motivation is rooted in his professional duty to identify people who have gained supernatural powers and to help them handle those abilities responsibly. After the Nohara children awaken to their powers, he takes on the task of guiding them. Along with Negiko Fukaya, a staff member of the committee's Saitama branch, he provides instruction that helps Shinnosuke and Himawari broaden their psychic talents. This early training lays the groundwork for the powers Shinnosuke later uses against Mitsuru Hiriya, the man empowered by the dark light who seeks to destroy the Earth.
In the story, Professor Ikebukuro operates as a mentor figure and a link between the everyday world and the supernatural events of the film. His most significant relationships are with Shinnosuke and Himawari, whose development he oversees, and he works closely with Negiko Fukaya as a fellow committee member. He does not undergo major personal change over the course of the film; his character remains steady and supportive, with his presence concentrated in the early phase of the plot when the children's abilities are discovered and cultivated. His notable traits are not combat-oriented but rather his expertise regarding psychic phenomena, his advisory role, and his eccentric personal interests, which add comic color to his appearances.
