Description
A-tarō is the central character of Mōretsu Atarō, a young boy living in downtown Tokyo. He is depicted as a serious and hardworking individual, often described as an edokko, which is a term for a person born and raised in the city's old downtown district. Despite his young age of ten years old, he displays a strong sense of responsibility. However, beneath this diligent exterior, he is also a sensitive child who can be emotionally affected by the situations he faces.
His background is marked by significant loss. A-tarō originally lived with and ran a family vegetable store alongside his father, X-gorō. His mother passed away tragically during childbirth, leaving his father to raise him. This family dynamic changes drastically at the beginning of the story when his father dies after falling from a tree while trying to retrieve a child's balloon. Following this sudden death, A-tarō is left to manage the store entirely on his own. He is driven by the need to keep his family's business alive and protect it from various threats, most notably the tanuki-faced gang leader known as Kokoro Boss.
