Description
In the world of Mōretsu Atarō, Boss Kokoro, also known as Kokoro no Boss, serves as a unique antagonist who blurs the lines between a traditional villain and a gentle soul. His most defining characteristic is the air of mystery surrounding his very identity. While he possesses a magnificent, bushy tail, it is never definitively revealed whether he is a tanuki (a Japanese raccoon dog) or a human being, leaving his true nature an eternal puzzle for the characters and the audience. This ambiguity is central to his charm, as he presents the imposing figure of a gang leader while harboring a surprisingly tender heart.

Despite his fearsome appearance and his status as a gang boss, Boss Kokoro is far from a typical criminal mastermind. On the surface, he appears to be a strong and intimidating figure, but he is deeply sentimental and emotional. He possesses a genuine love for the gentle things in life, such as flowers and small birds, which often conflicts with his rough exterior. This dichotomy is a source of much of the series' comedy, as he can shift from a menacing gang leader to a doting caretaker in an instant. His motivations are often driven by his emotions, and he is known to act on his heartfelt impulses rather than any calculated scheme for power or wealth.

In the narrative, Boss Kokoro is primarily positioned as the head of a rival gang, often causing trouble for the protagonist Atarō and his friends as he tries to protect his territory and interests in downtown Tokyo. However, he is not a truly malicious foe. He leads a small crew of two loyal and bumbling henchmen, Kopun A and Kopun B, who follow him faithfully and are often subjected to their boss’s changing moods and eccentric hobbies. His key relationships are defined by rivalry and respect; he is a rival to Butamatsu, a former yakuza who leads a gang of pigs. He is also a persistent, if not entirely serious, threat to Atarō and his father's ghost, X-gorō, as he seeks to maintain his influence over the local area.

Throughout the series, Boss Kokoro shows a notable capacity for development, primarily through his interactions with the world around him. He is famously known to be the caretaker of a small chick named Piyoko, whom he adores and dotes on as if she were his own child. This relationship softens his character considerably, revealing a paternal and caring side that contrasts sharply with his thuggish looks. In fact, as the series progressed, his popularity grew to the point where he, along with the alley cat Nyarome, effectively hijacked the show from the original main character, becoming central figures in the comedy. As for notable abilities, Boss Kokoro’s primary skill is not physical strength but his inexplicable ability to be taken seriously despite the absurdity of his situation. His imposing presence and deep voice allow him to command authority, even when his actions are comically sentimental or his schemes are ridiculous.
