Description
Kim Kyung-Hwa is a First Lieutenant serving as the helm and communications officer aboard the United Planets Space Force destroyer, the Soyokaze. At eighteen years old, she is one of the younger officers on the ship but carries out her duties with notable competence. Her physical appearance is that of a young woman with a height of 167 centimeters, and she is considered quite beautiful, a trait that is acknowledged by her fellow crew members.
In terms of personality, Kyung-Hwa is characterized by a distinctly laidback and free-spirited attitude. This relaxed nature often manifests in her disregard for strict military protocols, as she is frequently seen wearing fashionable, non-regulation clothing while on duty and reading fashion magazines instead of focusing entirely on her work. Her fashion-consciousness is a significant part of her identity, and she has a vibrant interest in contemporary style, even working part-time as a fashion model when on leave. This behavior is largely tolerated under the lenient command of Captain Justy Ueki Tylor. Despite her casual exterior, she remains a skilled and capable officer, representing one of the few voices of common sense aboard the often chaotic Soyokaze.
Her initial motivation for joining the military stemmed from a desire for clarity and purpose in her life, as she believed that placing herself in life-threatening situations would help define her future. Before her assignment to the Soyokaze, she was engaged to Odon Baek, the late captain of the UPSF Yunagi. Following his tragic death, she eventually married a fellow crew member, Nguyễn Hồ Minh.
Her most significant relationship on the ship is with Lieutenant Yuriko Star. Their association began with considerable friction, primarily because the strict, by-the-book Yuriko disapproved of Kyung-Hwa's casual attitude and uniform violations. This conflict forced Kyung-Hwa to reconcile her identity as both a woman and a soldier. Over time, the two found common ground and developed a deep sense of mutual respect and friendship, with Kyung-Hwa eventually calling Yuriko her senior in private. Regarding Captain Tylor, she seems to hold a fondness for him but ultimately chooses to view him as a decent and reliable captain rather than a romantic interest.
Kyung-Hwa has a notable background detail that distinguishes her character. Her name is inspired by the violinist Chung Kyung-Wha, and she is identified as being of Korean origin, specifically from an insular region called Joseon Island in the story's setting. In the original source material, her role is more prominent and includes being a skilled hacker with a hobby of collecting information, and she is considered the most beautiful woman on the ship. Later in the continuity of the novels, she is promoted to lieutenant general and becomes the principal of a military academy.
