Description
Kunimatsu Ishida is a short-statured but pugnacious boy whose love of fighting and eating overwhelms any interest in formal study. He is the eldest son in a family of four that relocates from Shizuoka to Tokyo after he has been expelled from multiple schools for constant brawling. Despite his rough edges and hot-headed nature, he possesses a fundamentally kind heart and a somewhat careless, impulsive disposition. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his younger brother, Ābō, and the neighbourhood children, often assuming the role of a scrappy ringleader.

The course of his life shifts when he crosses paths with the prestigious Harris Academy. After a scuffle with members of the school’s kendo club, he is drawn into the orbit of Yōko Asai, known as Ochara, the head of the newspaper club. Ochara intervenes in the conflict and persuades Kunimatsu to enroll at Harris, although he agrees without fully understanding the reason. The academy’s principal further encourages him to channel his temper and energy into organised sports. Kunimatsu ends up joining the baseball club after being promised unlimited boxed lunches, a condition that speaks directly to his enormous appetite.

Once inside Harris Academy, Kunimatsu’s athletic gifts become apparent. Though physically small, he proves to be a natural all-rounder, excelling in baseball and later participating in a variety of club activities. His tendency to settle disputes with his fists gradually transforms as he pours his aggression into competition, realising that he is a talented sportsman. His involvement in team play slowly tempers his stubborn, argumentative streak and gives him a sense of belonging he never found in previous schools.

Beyond the playing field, his key relationships anchor him. His family, particularly his little brother Ābō, provides a stable backdrop to his tumultuous school life. Ochara acts as his initial guide and a steadying influence, often smoothing over the trouble he stirs up. He forms friendships with classmates like Megane and others who become part of his daily adventures. His dynamic with the principal is one of mutual benefit: the headmaster sees potential beneath the delinquency, while Kunimatsu finds an environment that rewards his competitive fire instead of punishing it.

Throughout his time at Harris, Kunimatsu’s development centers on learning to harmonise his fighting spirit with teamwork. His journey does not erase his rough personality, but it redirects his energies into pursuits that earn him respect and a genuine place within the school community.
