Description
Lucy Shido is one of the three main protagonists of the anime Rayearth and serves as the central character of the story. In her original Japanese incarnation she is known as Hikaru Shidou, with the name Lucy Shido used in the Brazilian Portuguese adaptation. She is a fourteen-year-old eighth-grade student who lives with her parents and three older brothers named Masaru, Satoru, and Kakeru, helping them run a school for kendo. She has bright red eyes and scarlet hair, is small for her age, and is often mistaken for an elementary school student due to her youthful appearance and energetic demeanor. She owns a beloved dog named Hikari, who is her precious childhood companion.

At the beginning of the series, Lucy is summoned from Tokyo Tower to the magical world of Cephiro alongside two other girls, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji, by Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro. They are told they must become the Magic Knights to rescue the princess from the high priest Zagato and restore peace. Lucy is the first among the three to accept her role as a Magic Knight, demonstrating her strong will and sense of duty. She wields the power of fire, and her magical element is associated with the color red. Her spells include Arrow of Flame and Crimson Lightning, and she is skilled in swordsmanship due to her kendo training. Her signature weapon is a sword forged by the smith Presea from the legendary mineral Escudo, a blade that bursts into flames when touched by anyone other than its owner.

Lucy's personality is defined by her cheerful, spirited, and affectionate nature, with a tomboyish streak. She is often described as headstrong, determined, and fiercely loyal to her friends. Despite her youthful playfulness and innocence, she possesses immense bravery and a strong sense of justice. She can be childish at times, but she grows into a mature and responsible leader as the series progresses. Her motivations evolve over the course of the story: initially she wants to return home to her dog and her family, but she becomes deeply invested in protecting Cephiro and the people she meets there. She is empathetic and quick to trust others, often looking past outward appearances to understand their true feelings.

In the first season, Lucy forms a close bond with her companions Umi and Fuu, and together they learn to rely on each other as friends and teammates. She also develops a special connection with the creature Mokona, who serves as their guide; Lucy is the only one who can understand Mokona's speech. During their quest, she awakens her Mashin, a wolf-like being with a mane of fire named Rayearth, which she can summon as a giant armored entity to fight powerful enemies. The high point of the first arc comes when the girls discover that their true mission was not to defeat Zagato but to kill Princess Emeraude herself, who had lost control of her emotions and was endangering Cephiro. Lucy and her friends carry out this painful task and return to Earth traumatized.

In the second season, Lucy is drawn back to Cephiro, which is now vulnerable to invasion from three other nations: Autozam, Chizeta, and Fahren. Her personal growth continues as she struggles with guilt and inner darkness manifested as Nova, a dark reflection of herself born from her grief and self-hatred. Lucy learns to forgive herself and reconcile with her past. She meets Lantis, the younger brother of Zagato, and falls in love with him, a relationship that becomes a central emotional thread in the second season. She also befriends Eagle Vision, the leader of Autozam, and they become candidates for the new Pillar of Cephiro. Ultimately, Lucy is chosen as the Pillar but uses her wish not to sacrifice herself, but to abolish the Pillar system entirely, allowing Cephiro to exist without depending on one person's self-sacrifice. This decision reflects her deep understanding of the value of shared responsibility and her desire to create a world where everyone can live freely.

Lucy's notable abilities include her kendo skills, her fire-based magic, her ability to communicate with animals, and her powerful bond with her Mashin Rayearth. She is the physically strongest of the three Magic Knights and possesses the most resilient will. Her development from an innocent, slightly naive girl into a selfless, determined hero defines the emotional heart of the series. Her relationships with Umi, Fuu, Lantis, Eagle, and her dog Hikari shape her journey, and her ultimate act of destroying the Pillar system marks her as a transformative figure in the world of Cephiro.
