Description
Anne Ho-oji is one of the three main protagonists from the anime series Rayearth. She is known in the original Japanese version as Fuu Hououji, and her name is localized as Anne in several international adaptations, most notably the Brazilian Portuguese dub. She is a fourteen-year-old junior high school student who is transported from her world to the magical land of Cefiro alongside her two companions, Hikaru Shidou and Umi Ryuzaki. Out of the three, Anne is distinguished as the Magic Knight of Wind, wielding powers associated with air, healing, and protection.
Anne has a calm and serene demeanor that often serves as the voice of reason for her group. She is highly intelligent, possessing a great deal of book smarts and a strategic mind that helps the team navigate the many challenges they face in Cefiro. Unlike the more impulsive and fiery Hikaru or the headstrong and sincere Umi, Anne is thoughtful, polite, and tends to smile often, creating a gentle and approachable presence. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a deep-seated insecurity. She struggles with feelings of inferiority, particularly in relation to her older sister, who she believes is more beautiful and accomplished. This has led Anne to immerse herself in her studies and hobbies, resulting in her having few close friends at school. In many ways, her greatest enemy is her own timidity, shyness, and indecisiveness.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to fulfill her duty as a Magic Knight and save the captive Princess Emeraude, upon whose prayers the stability of the world of Cefiro depends. Initially, this is a mission she and her friends are thrust into without choice, but Anne grows to embrace the responsibility. Her journey is not just about fighting external enemies but also about overcoming her personal weaknesses. The quest forces her to find confidence in her own decisions and strength, pushing her past her natural inclination to stay in the background.
In the narrative of Rayearth, Anne plays the crucial role of the group's tactician and support. Her sharp intellect is invaluable for solving puzzles and understanding the lore of Cefiro that the party encounters. While she is a capable fighter, her magical abilities lean more toward defense and recovery, making her the guardian of the group who ensures her more offensively-oriented friends can continue battling. She is also the one who awakens the Mashin, the giant golem-like beings that the Knights pilot, named Windom, a four-winged bird-like entity found slumbering in the Temple of the Sky.
Her key relationships are central to her character arc. She shares a strong, balanced friendship with Hikaru and Umi. Hikaru's energetic optimism and Umi's directness complement Anne's thoughtful nature, creating a harmonious and effective team. A significant part of Anne's personal story is her romantic relationship with a mysterious young man named Ferio. She falls in love with him during their adventures, but her inherent shyness becomes a major obstacle, preventing her from openly expressing her feelings. Her development in this area involves learning to overcome her bashfulness to embrace the connection she shares with him.
Anne's notable abilities are all tied to her element of wind. Her magical repertoire includes several distinct spells. For offense, she can use attacks like Tempestade Verde, a powerful gust of wind, and Vento da Lei, which binds an enemy in ropes of air. However, her most vital contributions are her defensive and healing spells. Vento da Cura allows her to heal wounds, making her an indispensable member of the party in prolonged battles. She also possesses protective barriers like Winds of Protection. In combat, she wields a long sword that has the unique property of becoming too heavy for anyone other than herself to lift, a magical safeguard that reflects her role as a dedicated and chosen knight.
