In the world of Cephiro, Clef holds the distinguished title of Master Mage, serving as the primary advisor and the most powerful sorcerer in the land. Despite an appearance that suggests a young child, possibly around seven years old, Clef is in fact over seven centuries old, with some accounts placing his age at 745 or 746 years. He has distinctive lavender or purple hair and green or light blue eyes, and he typically carries a large staff that houses a magical creature named Fuhla.
Clef's personality is a study in contrasts. On the surface, he often comes across as grumpy, short-tempered, and blunt, with a no-nonsense attitude that can make him seem like a fussy old man trapped in a youthful body. However, this serious exterior masks a deeply compassionate and gentle nature. His primary motivation is the well-being and happiness of the people of Cephiro, especially his students, for whom he feels a strong, paternal sense of protectiveness. He is not reckless; preferring to work behind the scenes and carefully plan his actions rather than rush into danger, and he generally values silence and succinct speech.
In the story, Clef is the one who summons the three Magic Knights from Tokyo to Cephiro, informing them of their destiny to save the Pillar, Princess Emeraude. He serves as their initial guide, bestowing upon them their magical powers and their evolving armor, though the creation of their weapons is left to the Master Smith, Presea. His role is complicated by his deep personal history with the story's central antagonists. Zagato, the High Priest who supposedly kidnapped Emeraude, and Alcyone, a powerful magic-user, were both once his pupils. Furthermore, he held a great deal of affection for Princess Emeraude, who was like a daughter to him. This web of relationships makes him a reluctant leader, torn between his duty to Cephiro and his love for the people caught in its crisis.

Following the original crisis, he takes a leadership role in rebuilding Cephiro and even takes the young mage Ascot under his wing as a new student.
