Mashin Lexus is the fire-aligned Rune God, or Mashin, from the original video animation adaptation of the Magic Knight Rayearth series, serving as the bonded mechanical companion and armor of the Magic Knight Hikaru Shidou. He is known as Rayearth in the television series and manga, but in the OVA he is distinctly named Lexus and takes the form of a majestic lion with a mane made of flames, capable of breathing fire. In his fully armored Mashin form, he appears as a powerful, two-legged lion-like mecha clad in armor. As the Spirit of Fire, Lexus represents passion, strength, and the future. His background is ancient: he is one of three legendary Mashin created by the being Mokona, along with Selece, the water dragon, and Windam, the four-winged bird. These Mashin slumber in elemental shrines within the land of Cephiro until they are awakened by the Magic Knights who prove their worthiness. Lexus was awakened by Hikaru after she passed a trial of self-sacrifice, choosing to risk her own life for her friends rather than save herself. His personality is that of a wise and ancient being, serving not only as a powerful weapon but also as a mentor and ally to his Knight. He communicates telepathically with Hikaru and shares a deep psychic bond with her. His primary motivation is to aid the Magic Knights in their mission to protect Cephiro and ultimately to defeat the dark forces threatening it. In the story, Lexus plays a crucial role as Hikaru's primary means of combat against powerful enemies such as Zagato and the corrupted Princess Emeraude. He also participates in the formation of the combined Ultimate Mashin, uniting with Selece and Windam to create a single, more formidable entity. His key relationships include his deep bond with Hikaru, built on trust and mutual respect, and his fellowship with the other Mashin, with whom he cooperates in battle. Throughout the OVA, Lexus remains a steadfast presence, guiding and fighting alongside Hikaru. At the conclusion of the story, after the Pillar system is dismantled, Lexus and the other Mashin depart from Cephiro along with Mokona, their purpose fulfilled. His notable abilities include flight, powerful fiery attacks, immense physical strength in his armored form, and the capacity to combine with the other Mashin into a single ultimate warrior.
