Description
Ascott is a young summoner, known in the world of Cephiro as a Palu, who initially serves as an antagonist to the Magic Knights. His background is defined by loneliness and rejection. Ascott possesses the unusual ability to summon large, often monstrous creatures, whom he genuinely considers his friends. Despite these creatures not having any ill will, the villagers of Cephiro fear their strange appearances, leading to Ascott being driven away from every place he tries to call home. His isolation ends when the high priest Zagato offers him and his summoned companions a place to live in exchange for his service, an offer Ascott accepts out of a sense of gratitude and a desire to belong.
In terms of personality, Ascott initially presents as arrogant and self-centered, mocking the Magic Knights and carrying out Zagato's orders without hesitation. However, this behavior stems from a place of deep-seated hatred and loneliness rather than true malice. His heart, impoverished by a lack of affection, reflects in his cruel attitude. His primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, he fights to repay Zagato for giving him a home. This changes profoundly after a confrontation with Umi Ryuzaki, one of the Magic Knights. She slaps him and lectures him about how using his friends in battle is wrong, as it causes them pain and leads to their destruction. This moment causes a change of heart, and Ascott forsakes Zagato, learning the true meaning of friendship and loyalty.
Ascott's role in the story evolves from a direct antagonist to an ally of the Magic Knights. After his defection, he aids the knights on several occasions. His most significant development occurs in the second part of the story, where his appearance dramatically changes. Due to the power of his own will, the lessons he has learned, and his growing feelings for Umi, he transforms from a small child into a tall, calm, and kind young man. While he still retains his ability to summon monsters, he also learns other spells from the master mage Clef to avoid using his friends as living weapons in combat.
Key relationships define his character arc. His bond with Zagato is one of transactional gratitude, while his connection to Umi is the catalyst for his redemption. He develops strong romantic feelings for her, which he eventually confesses. Umi responds that she loves him as much as everyone else in Cephiro, but does not reciprocate his romantic feelings, a fact that saddens him but does not deter his loyalty. In some versions of the story, there are stronger implications of a budding relationship between them. He also shares a sibling-like bond with Caldina, another former servant of Zagato, and they are shown to cherish each other.
Regarding his notable abilities, Ascott is a summoner who can call forth a variety of creatures to fight for him. These creatures, which include named beings such as Atalante, Pajero, Vigor, Duesy, and Capella, are based on car models and have diverse powers ranging from burrowing and flight to energy beams and acid attacks. He also possesses the ability to travel on a small, flying platform of rock. Later, seeking to avoid harming his summoned friends, he learns additional, non-summoning magic spells from Clef. In the OVA adaptation, Ascott is portrayed as more bloodthirsty and is not shown to summon multiple creatures, instead wielding a single, large deity-like monster before ultimately dying after succumbing to his dark powers.
