Description
Princesa Esmeralda, known in the original Japanese version as Princess Emeraude, is the Pillar of Cephiro, the magical world where the story takes place. As the Pillar, she is the most important person in that world, because the peace and order of all of Cephiro depend on her constant prayers. She is introduced as a beautiful and elegant young woman with long blond hair, light eyes, a white dress, and a golden tiara set with a green orb, and she is deeply loved by her subjects. Little is revealed about her early life at first, but it becomes clear that she was once a noblewoman of Cephiro and the older sister of the swordsman Ferio. In the anime, she used her power to protect her brother from punishment, and later, at his own request, she used magic to make him forget that she existed so that he would not grieve for her, and she asked to forget him in return so that she could devote herself entirely to her duty. In the manga, Ferio remembers that she is his sister and left the palace on his own accord. The sorcerer Clef watched over her throughout her life.

Her personality is gentle, kind, and devoted to her duty, but she carries an immense emotional burden. The Pillar is forbidden from falling in love, because a Pillar must dedicate every thought and prayer to sustaining Cephiro. Esmeralda broke this rule by falling in love with Zagato, the high priest. The conflict between her love for him and her duty tears her apart; she even imprisoned herself in a water dungeon beneath her palace in an attempt to focus only on Cephiro, but found that she could not stop thinking of him. Her feelings destabilized the world, and this is the true cause of the crisis affecting Cephiro.

Her motivation drives the entire first part of the story. She summoned the three Magic Knights from Tokyo with the apparent mission of rescuing her from Zagato, who had seemingly kidnapped her. The truth is the opposite: no one in Cephiro is allowed to kill the Pillar, and the Pillar cannot take her own life, so she brought the knights from another world for the sole purpose of killing her. She wanted to be freed from the pain of loving someone she was forbidden to love, and to be reunited with Zagato in death. Zagato himself had kidnapped her for a different reason: he loved her, wanted to protect her from the knights, and wished to end a system he saw as unjust.

Both in the anime and in the manga, this revelation reframes her role. She is the princess who needs to be rescued only in appearance; in truth she is the one who called for her own death. After the knights defeat and kill Zagato, Esmeralda reacts with shock that turns into grief and then into pure hatred. In this state she undergoes a dramatic transformation: her body becomes that of a tall, mature woman, still with blond hair and light eyes, but with a sinister demeanor filled with fury and a desire for vengeance against the knights who took her beloved from her. She attacks them, and in her despair forgets that she herself had summoned them. During the battle, the knights perceive fleeting visions of her true self, who pleads with them to carry out her final wish and send her where she can think only of Zagato. They reluctantly comply, and she dies in peace, appearing one last time in Zagato's arms, smiling and thanking them. With the last of her power she returns them to Tokyo at the exact moment they had left.

Her relationship with Zagato is the emotional core of her character. Their forbidden love, the suffering it causes her, and her decision to end her own life rather than rule with a grieving heart define her tragedy. Her relationship with Ferio shows her compassion and her willingness to sacrifice personal bonds for the sake of her duty. Clef is her devoted attendant and guardian, having watched over her all her life. Her relationship with the Magic Knights, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, is also central: she calls them to Cephiro, guides them through Mokona and Clef, and ultimately entrusts them with the burden of her death, a choice that leaves the three girls consumed by guilt.

Her development traces a path from a serene and beloved ruler, to a conflicted woman struggling against her forbidden feelings, to a grief-stricken and vengeful figure consumed by rage, and finally to a purified soul at peace. Her death marks the end of the first part of the story and has lasting consequences: without its Pillar, Cephiro begins to collapse, setting the stage for the crisis that defines the second part of the story.

Her notable abilities are tied to her role as Pillar. Her will and prayers maintain peace and harmony across Cephiro, and her magic is powerful enough to shape the world around her. She demonstrates the ability to summon people across worlds, as she does with the Magic Knights. In the anime she uses her magic to erase her brother's memories of her. She also has the capacity to fight: after her transformation she summons her own Mashin, or Rune God, and takes up Zagato's fallen sword to battle the knights. Even in death she retains enough power to transport the three girls back to their own world at the precise moment they left it. At the same time, her position makes her vulnerable: she cannot harm herself, and no inhabitant of Cephiro can harm her, which is precisely why she needed outsiders to fulfill her wish.
