Description
Hayao Kakizaki is a supporting character in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, serving as a variable fighter pilot for the U.N. Spacy. He is a Japanese man assigned to the Vermilion Squadron, where he serves alongside the prodigy Maximilian Jenius under the command of Hikaru Ichijyo. In the television series, he pilots a brown and white VF-1A Valkyrie, while in the feature film The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, his fighter features green striping.

Kakizaki’s personality provides a stark contrast to his more focused and talented comrades. He is portrayed as a happy-go-lucky, laid-back individual who loves cracking jokes both on and off duty, serving as a primary source of comic relief within the series. His motivations for becoming a military pilot are notably unserious, driven more by a desire to become popular with women than by a sense of duty or ambition. He is boisterous, enthusiastic, and has a lust for life, food, and female attention, but his lack of discipline often undermines his effectiveness in battle. He is notably zealous as a pilot, eager to achieve a high kill count, yet this eagerness, combined with his lower skill level, frequently leads him into dangerous situations from which Hikaru or Max must rescue him.

Within the Vermilion Squadron, Kakizaki holds the rank of a subordinate pilot, looking up to Hikaru as his captain. Despite his bumbling nature, he shares a friendly and easygoing camaraderie with both Hikaru and Max, forming a close bond with them as a fellow pilot. His relationships are central to his role, as his interactions highlight the contrast between an average, unskilled pilot and the exceptional talents of his wingmen. This dynamic reinforces the gravity of their situation, as Kakizaki is a reminder that not everyone is a natural ace, and that the war exacts a heavy toll on ordinary soldiers.

Kakizaki’s journey is cut short by his death in Space War I. In the television series, his end comes during a catastrophic malfunction of the Macross's barrier system. As the energy field overloads, his Valkyrie is unable to escape the blast radius and is destroyed, leaving no remains. His death occurs shortly after the loss of Roy Focker, adding to the mounting casualties faced by the Macross's crew. In the feature film adaptation, his demise occurs under different circumstances; he is shot down by a missile barrage from a squadron of Queadluun-Rau battle suits led by the Meltrandi ace Milia Fallyna. In a moment that undercuts his awareness of danger, he is joking with Hikaru and underestimating their female opponents just before he is killed. This fate, a direct consequence of his inattentiveness and lack of experience, cements his legacy as a tragic figure who, despite his enthusiasm, was out of his depth.

As a pilot, Kakizaki’s abilities are decidedly average. While he has logged a decent amount of flight simulator time and achieved an A ranking, his real-world combat experience and skills are far inferior to those of Hikaru and especially Max. He is consistently described as the least serious and least skilled member of the squadron, a characterization that ultimately proves fatal. His notable lack of ability serves as a narrative tool to elevate the prowess of his teammates and to illustrate the harsh realities of war, where even the enthusiastic and cheerful are not guaranteed to survive. Beyond the original series, his legacy is indirectly referenced in the sequel series Macross Frontier through a superstition known as the Valkyrie's Curse, which warns that talking about women during combat is bad luck and may lead to being shot down. In the western adaptation Robotech, the character was localized and renamed Ben Dixon.
