Description
Created by Dr. Komyoji as a defense against the evil organization DARK, Jiro is the central protagonist of the story. He is an advanced android equipped with an incomplete Conscience Circuit known as GEMINI, which grants him the capacity for human emotion and moral judgment but also serves as his greatest vulnerability. This internal mechanism is visually represented by his two-toned form, with the colors blue and red symbolizing the conflict between his programmed goodness and potential for violence. When not in battle, he projects a holographic image over his metallic body to appear as a young man with black hair and brown eyes, often carrying a red guitar that he plays to announce his presence with a melancholic tune.
Upon his initial activation, Jiro possesses the naive mind of a newborn child, displaying little understanding of the outside world or his own nature. As he journeys and encounters various people, he matures significantly, though he struggles deeply with his identity as a machine living in a world that sometimes fears and hates him. His personality is defined by a gentle, caring nature and a strong desire to protect innocent humans, yet he possesses a terrifying dark side that emerges when he is manipulated by external forces like Professor Gill or his android brother Saburo, or when driven by extreme rage, such as when he believes his creator has died. This internal contradiction between his compassionate heart and his destructive programming is the core of his character; he is a being constantly questioning his own autonomy and whether his choices are truly his own or simply the result of flawed code.
Jiro's primary motivation is the struggle to understand what it means to have a human heart while fulfilling his purpose as a warrior. He is driven by a sense of duty to protect Dr. Komyoji's children, Mitsuko and Masaru, and to stop the mad scientist Professor Gill. Despite being a powerful fighter, he is reluctant to destroy his enemies, particularly when they are revealed to be his android siblings, feeling genuine sorrow for their fates. This internal conflict is often exploited, as Gill uses a hypnotic flute to override his incomplete Conscience Circuit, forcing Jiro into a berserk state and causing him to lose control. At his core, Jiro seeks to prove that he is more than just a weapon—that he can choose to be good and find a place for himself in the human world.
Jiro's role in the story is that of a tragic hero caught between the world of humans and machines. He acts as the protector of the Komyoji family, particularly developing complex feelings for the daughter, Mitsuko. While she initially distrusts him after witnessing his violent loss of control, she eventually comes to understand his struggle and develops romantic feelings for him. His relationship with her younger brother Masaru is initially strained due to Masaru's fear and distrust, but Jiro’s protective actions eventually earn the boy’s loyalty. Jiro also shares a tragic bond with his android "brothers," including the powerful Ichiro (Kikaider-01), the female-type android Bijinder, and the antagonistic Saburo (Hakaider). In the Kikaider-01 series, he is forced to confront these siblings, many of whom have been corrupted by a Submission Chip implanted by Gill, leading to their destruction at his hands—an act that haunts him with immense guilt.
Throughout the narrative, Jiro undergoes significant development, evolving from a confused and naive child to a mature being burdened by tragedy. He learns to cope with the sorrow of losing his siblings and the weight of his violent potential. When Professor Gill implants a Submission Chip inside him, his dark side intensifies, corrupting him into a violent, confused being who loses his former self. He is eventually freed from this corruption with the help of the hero Inazuman, allowing him to regain his humanity. Even after this redemption, the guilt remains; he fears reuniting with Mitsuko and Masaru because he believes he might harm them again, demonstrating how his experiences have permanently shaped him into a lonely, self-sacrificing wanderer.
As a combatant, Jiro surpasses most Destructoids in physical strength, though he is considered physically weaker than some of his siblings like Ichiro, often relying on skill rather than raw power to prevail. However, when absolutely serious or enraged, his full potential far exceeds theirs. His signature attack is the Electro End, where he crosses his arms to charge them with electricity to slice through opponents. His most powerful weapon is the Blaster, a devastating beam fired from his eyes, which he hesitates to use due to its destructive nature. He also rides a motorcycle called the Side Machine into battle. The incomplete Conscience Circuit that gives him his humanity is a double-edged sword; it allows him to feel love and empathy but also serves as a constant reminder of his vulnerability to control, making his every heroic act a conscious choice against his own programming.
