Description
Ragnus is a supporting character in the anime Ariel, appearing in the original video animation Ariel Visual. He is a fleet commander in the service of the Gedo Corporation, the alien organization behind the invasion of Earth, and he holds a rank above Albert Houser, the captain of the corporation's battleship Orkus. The two men are old acquaintances from their academy days, and Ragnus is also a childhood friend of Simone, the head of the accounting department who serves under Houser on the battleship.

Ragnus's arrival is what sets the events of Ariel Visual in motion. Having just completed an invasion operation in another star system, he stops at Earth during a brief pause in his journey toward his next battlefield. He gives two reasons for the detour: publicly, he wants to assist Houser, who has been struggling to make headway with the Earth invasion, and privately, he carries a concealed purpose that he does not reveal, which adds an air of hidden motivation to his visit. He is also aware that Earth is defended by a troublesome figure known as the star-breaker Saber, a mysterious alien who fights on the side of the planet's defenders.

In terms of personality, Ragnus is presented as a composed and professional senior officer who maintains friendly personal ties with those under his command. His willingness to interrupt his own military schedule in order to help a struggling subordinate points to a sense of personal loyalty, while the secret reason for his journey hints that his motives go beyond simple duty. He treats his relationships with Houser and Simone as genuine friendships rather than mere working arrangements, and this personal side of his character makes him more than a faceless figure of the invaders' hierarchy.

Ragnus's role in the story is that of a catalyst for its central crisis. As a fleet commander, his importance lies in strategy and coordination rather than personal combat. The offensive that unfolds following his arrival demonstrates this: drop troops descend on the Shinjuku district as an apparent attack, drawing the response of the Kishida family and their giant robot ARIEL, while the true operation, carried out by a much larger body of soldiers, advances against the SCEBAI organization. This tactical deception places Earth's defenders in their greatest danger and establishes Ragnus as a central figure in the conflict of Ariel Visual.

His personal development is not a major focus of the series. He appears in a supporting capacity as a representative of the invaders' higher command, and his character is defined primarily by his rank, his connections to the alien crew, and the undisclosed purpose that brings him to Earth. Within that limited scope, he serves as both a formidable opponent for the Earth-side cast and a figure whose private intentions add depth to the invasion plot.
