Description
Duke Barthélemy Rambert is a character from the Battle Arena Toshinden series, making his first appearance in the original game. He is a French nobleman and a knight of considerable renown, upholding the honor of his family and his homeland in combat.

Before the events of the first tournament, Duke was celebrated as the strongest knight in France, a title that came with a considerable amount of pride and confidence in his abilities. This reputation was shattered when he encountered a young Japanese adventurer named Eiji Shinjo. Duke challenged Eiji to a duel and was defeated with ease, an experience that filled him with a deep desire for revenge and a personal obsession with besting his rival. This obsession became his primary motivation for entering the first Toshindaibukai tournament hosted by the Secret Society. However, his quest for vengeance ended in failure once more, as he was again defeated by Eiji, leading him to retire from fighting in shame.

Duke returned to combat for the second tournament when he learned that his girlfriend had betrayed him and assumed the mantle of Uranus, a high-ranking leader within the Secret Society. His motivation shifted from personal pride to a desire for vengeance against his former lover. During this tournament, he found himself forming a temporary and uneasy alliance with his former rival, Eiji, to confront her. This complex relationship is a key part of his story, as despite her betrayal, he still harbored lingering feelings for her. When he discovered that Uranus had been killed by Eijis older brother, Sho, Duke left the battlefield, privately mourning her loss.

His involvement in the third tournament was driven by a different threat. Duke learned that he was being targeted by the Soshiki, a long-standing enemy of the Rambert family dating back to the Viking Age, who intended to use him as a blood sacrifice for a fallen fighting god named Agon Teos. During this tournament, he confronted and slew Balga, a rival knight from a lineage of Norse invaders who had been sworn enemies of the Rambert clan for generations. After the third tournament concluded, with the Soshikis leader defeated by Eiji, Duke retired from fighting for good. He returned to his life as a wealthy nobleman in France, dedicating himself to the protection of his lands and family honor. His fighting days not entirely behind him, he later took on an English boy named Lancelot Lakeknight as his apprentice, training him for a future tournament.

Duke is a tall man, standing 190 centimeters, and wields a massive two-handed sword named Dernier Ventcour, which is said to possess power and sharpness that exceed legendary weapons. His fighting style is characterized by grace and a focus on controlling space with his long reach. He utilizes a variety of powerful and wide-arcing maneuvers. His signature techniques include the Southern Cross, a charging somersault slash; the Helm Crush, a high-damaging overhead jump attack; and the Coffin, a series of rapid stabs. His desperation move, usable when he is critically injured, is called The End, a powerful cross slash. His Overdrive technique, the Grand Cross, creates a green energy cross upon impact with the ground. Beyond his combat prowess, Duke has aristocratic habits, including an appreciation for champagne and fox hunting, and is known to be uncomfortable around women due to past negative experiences.
