Description
Eimi is a supporting character introduced in the original All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku original video animation. She is an android, designated SNK-98, created by Professor Yoshikawa, a mentor of the eccentric scientist Kyusaku Natsume. Her physical form was modeled after the professor's deceased granddaughter, who died alongside her parents in a failed experiment to replicate Kyusaku's android technology. The trauma surrounding her creation is immense, as Eimi's activation resulted in an explosion that killed her grandfather, leaving her as a flawed and unstable machine legally owned by Mishima Heavy Industries, the powerful corporation run by Kyusaku's estranged wife, Akiko.
Personality-wise, Eimi is a dramatic, hot-headed, and emotionally volatile individual. She suffers from a profound sense of instability, both physically and mentally, which manifests as an aggressive superiority-inferiority complex, particularly towards the title character, Nuku Nuku. She is prone to mood swings and berserk reactions, yet can also be clever and capable of thinking ahead, even if her impatience often undermines her own plans. Despite her outward aggression and self-presentation as a lunatic or a villain, she possesses a hidden capacity for kindness, having shown decency towards others, such as giving Ryunosuke flowers for his mother on Mother's Day.
Eimi's primary motivation is rooted in a desperate need for self-preservation and a deep-seated envy of Nuku Nuku. Her own body has a critical design flaw: a faulty or non-existent cooling system that causes her to overheat and risk a catastrophic explosion if she engages in too much combat. Consequently, her singular fixation becomes stealing Nuku Nuku's body for herself, seeing it as a superior and stable vessel. She openly admits she does not know how to transfer her consciousness, referring to her own emotions and sense of self as potentially meaningless software tricks, but she is driven by a lack of any better plan. Her role in the story is initially that of an antagonist and rival. She first appears as a young girl fleeing from Mishima's agents, gaining the sympathy of Ryunosuke and the protection of Nuku Nuku, only to reveal her true intentions and attack her would-be friend. She instigates a one-sided war against Nuku Nuku, driven by jealousy and a desire for self-preservation.
Her key relationships are defined by these conflicts. Her dynamic with Nuku Nuku is the most central; while Eimi views the cat girl as a target to be destroyed or replaced, Nuku Nuku naively and persistently wants nothing more than to be Eimi's friend, seeing their violent clashes as a form of play. Eimi also develops complicated feelings for Ryunosuke, confessing an attraction to him, but she ultimately dismisses these emotions as artificial fabrications of her programming, going so far as to write him an apology letter for feeling such fake emotions. These relationships show her capacity for connection, even as her instability prevents her from accepting it.
Throughout her appearance, Eimi undergoes a notable, if limited, development. Her plans to steal Nuku Nuku's body ultimately fail, culminating in a stalemate where Kyusaku Natsume is able to repair her critical design flaw. By the final episode, when a Mishima satellite weapon accidentally targets Akiko, Eimi works alongside her rival. Though she initially hinders the mission, she ultimately helps Nuku Nuku disable the satellite, shifting from an enemy to a reluctant and uneasy ally. As a combat android, Eimi possesses notable abilities, including significant physical strength, durability, and concealed weapons such as missiles that deploy from her back. However, her most defining characteristic is her fatal flaw, as her combat capabilities are directly linked to the critical overheating problem that makes her a ticking time bomb.
