Description
Polylina, also known by her heroic title Lady Mask Polylina, is a masked heroine figure within the Galaxy Fraulein Yuna story. Inside the fictional world, she is the title character of a highly popular television drama, and she is presented to other characters as a real, glamorous crime-fighting heroine. Her persona is built around an elegant and theatrical style; she speaks in dramatic declarations, pledges to protect the weak, and announces her arrival with a signature line about appearing together with love. Her mask and costume conceal her true identity, and the narrative treats her as a mysterious presence whom other characters encounter as if she were a genuine superhero.
In reality, Polylina is the alter ego of Liavelt von Neuestein, usually called Lia, who is one of protagonist Yuna Kagurazaka's closest friends. Lia possesses psychic abilities, and it is these powers that make the heroics attributed to Polylina possible. Yuna never recognizes her friend behind the mask; she believes Polylina is a real and separate person, and she is the character's biggest admirer, counting herself as the first member of Polylina's fan club. The gap between Yuna's starstruck devotion and her complete failure to connect Polylina with Lia is a steady source of comedy throughout the series.
Polylina's motivation works on two levels. On the surface, her in-story television persona fights for justice and protects the innocent, and she carries herself with a strong sense of heroic duty. Beneath that, Lia adopts the identity in part to stand beside Yuna and lend aid during dangerous incidents while keeping her own involvement secret. Loyalty to Yuna is the real engine behind her actions, and she repeatedly turns up at crucial moments to help rescue or support the main cast.
Within the story, Polylina first appeared in the series' drama CD spinoffs before being carried into the games and anime. In the first anime OVA, she appears as a mysterious masked ally who helps Yuna's friend Yuri stage a rescue when Yuna is framed and taken captive. In the second OVA, Yuna still idolizes her and even shares a concert stage with her, and Polylina gains a small white robot cat companion that can transform into a weapon to assist in battle. In the video game installments, she is a recurring companion who accompanies Yuna during parts of the adventure and is playable in certain battle sections; in Galaxy Fraulein Yuna 3, her masked form is one of the strongest units, with high combat statistics on both offense and defense, and she can serve as the leader of one of the two groups when the party splits.
Her key relationships center on Yuna and Lia. The most important dynamic is the triangle between Yuna, the fictional Polylina she worships, and the real friend Lia whose secret identity she never discovers. Polylina also works alongside Yuri, particularly during the rescue in the first OVA, and her heroic persona gradually becomes a familiar part of the group's wider circle of allies.
As a character, Polylina develops from a purely showy fictional heroine into a more concrete fighting ally. What begins as an affectionate parody of masked-heroine television shows becomes a genuine combat role, and her appearances shift from surprise cameos to active participation in major battles. Throughout it all, the defining trait remains the secrecy of her identity and the affectionate irony that Yuna's greatest hero is actually her own best friend.
In terms of abilities, Polylina is a capable combatant whose powers are rooted in Lia's psychic talents. She can teleport, which lets her appear dramatically and escape danger, and she fights effectively at both range and close quarters, using gunfire and blade attacks in battle. In the games she is characterized as an attack-oriented unit with notable range and powerful special moves, while in the second OVA her robot cat can shift into a weapon form to supplement her fighting ability. Her combination of mobility, striking power, and the mystique of her hidden identity makes her a versatile and memorable ally among the figures who gather around Yuna.
