OVA
Description
Eriko "Ellie" Kusumoto is a central character in Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01. She is the lead developer and test pilot of the Slave Trooper MADOX-01, an advanced anti-tank powered armor suit. She designed the suit's software and was instrumental in its creation, working with the joint development team involving a Japanese company, the Self-Defense Forces, and the U.S. military. Before the main events, she demonstrated the suit's capabilities by single-handedly defeating a force of remote-controlled tanks during a trial, an act that humiliated the American tank commander Kilgore and seeded his personal grudge.
Ellie is calm, resourceful, and highly professional. She takes her responsibilities seriously and is proactive in crisis situations. When the MADOX-01 falls into the hands of an inexperienced mechanic named Koji Sugimoto after a transport accident, she immediately takes action to retrieve it. She prioritizes the safe recovery of the suit and the protection of civilians, analysing the situation and using her knowledge to guide others.
Her primary motivation is to ensure the MADOX-01 does not cause harm or fall under the control of someone reckless like Kilgore. She wants the technology to succeed and be presented positively to the U.S. military, but she is not willing to sacrifice safety for that goal. She is driven by a sense of duty and professional pride.
In the story, Ellie appears early as the ace pilot who defeats Kilgore's tanks, establishing the suit's power and the lieutenant's humiliation. After the suit is lost, she pursues Koji across Tokyo, donning the MADOX-0, an earlier prototype, to intercept him before Kilgore can cause a disaster. At the climax, she provides crucial guidance to Koji, enabling him to overcome Kilgore's tank in battle. She also disables the suit's automatic combat program, freeing Koji from the software lock that trapped him inside.
Her main dynamic is with Koji, whom she initially views as an intruder but comes to assist. A mentor-like bond forms as she teaches him how to use the suit effectively. With Kilgore, she shares a tense rivalry born from his bruised ego. She outperformed him in the initial test, and his obsessive desire for revenge endangers the city. She directly confronts him to stop his rampage.
The OVA format offers limited character evolution, but Ellie demonstrates adaptability. She shifts from simply recovering the hardware to actively cooperating with an amateur pilot when the situation escalates. Her willingness to explain the suit's functions to Koji reflects her ability to put the mission's success over protocol.
Ellie's notable abilities include exceptional piloting, capable of intricate maneuvers in powered armor. Her engineering knowledge allows her to understand and articulate the MADOX-01's systems, including its software quirks and weaponry. She is a competent tactician, able to outthink military personnel like Kilgore. In addition to piloting, she displays strong analytical skills, quickly diagnosing the software lock that traps Koji and devising a plan to release him.
