Description
Jōji Minami is the primary protagonist of the series and the central figure who transforms into the armored warrior known as Tekkaman. His background is forged in tragedy, as he is the son of the renowned spaceflight expert Dr. Kosei Minami. Working alongside his father to find a new home for humanity after Earth suffered an ecological collapse, Jōji witnessed the destruction of the spacecraft Space Angel near Saturn's orbit by the alien Waldaster. The attack resulted in the death of his father, an event that instilled in Jōji a deep-seated hatred for all extraterrestrial life and an obsessive desire for revenge.

Personality-wise, Jōji is an intense and impulsive individual. Driven by his trauma and prejudice, he often resorts to violence in conflicts. His initial hostility toward aliens is extreme, extending even to Andro Umeda, a peaceful alien refugee from the planet Sanno who joins the Earth defense team. This xenophobia tragically culminates in an incident where he mistakenly identifies a peaceful ship from the Yukoku star as an enemy and kills everyone on board, leaving only a single survivor named Karen. Despite these flaws, Jōji possesses a powerful and unshakable sense of justice, which underpins his commitment to protecting humanity and fighting against oppression.

As the primary user of the Tekkaman armor, Jōji's role in the story is that of the frontline fighter and de facto leader of the Space Knights, a defense team that includes Professor Amachi, his daughter Hiromi, Andro Umeda, and the mutated Sanno native Mutan. He utilizes the robotic system Pegas to initiate his transformation. However, due to incomplete compatibility with the armor, his transformation is limited to exactly 37 minutes and 33 seconds; exceeding this time limit risks a fatal biological collapse. In his armored state, he gains superhuman strength, laser resistance, and enhanced agility. His notable abilities include wielding a double-bladed lance known as the Tek Lancer. His ultimate attack is the Voltekker, a high-energy projectile fired from the emblem on his forehead, which leaves him exhausted and vulnerable after use.

Throughout the narrative, Jōji experiences significant character development. Repeated confrontations with the common enemy, General Rambos of the Waldaster, gradually transform his hostile relationship with Andro into one of mutual respect. His encounters with other peaceful alien species also slowly moderate his xenophobia. This evolution is reflected in his motivations, which shift from a singular focus on protecting Earth to a broader concern for other planets oppressed by the Waldaster. In the final episode, Jōji makes the ultimate sacrifice, holding off General Rambos's attack to enable the experimental Leap Navigation system of the spaceship Blue Earth to activate and escape, leaving his fate uncertain but implying his death in the process.
