Description
Kentarō Gō, also known by his Boazanian birth name Ra Gōru or Prince Gohl, is a central figure whose actions and past drive the narrative forward. He is the genius scientist responsible for the creation of the super robot Voltes V and the biological father of the three Gō brothers: Kenichi, Daijirō, and Hiyoshi. His life is defined by a profound struggle against the tyrannical caste system of his home planet, Boazania.
Born into the Boazanian royal family as a nephew of the emperor, Kentarō was born without horns, a physical trait that under his planet's rigid hierarchy would normally condemn an individual to a lifetime of slavery. To protect him from this fate and avoid a scandal, his family forced him to wear prosthetic horns from childhood. Growing up, he witnessed firsthand the brutal and systematic oppression of the hornless class by the horned elite, an experience that forged within him an unshakeable desire for justice and equality. Blessed with an extraordinarily brilliant scientific mind, he excelled in his studies and eventually rose to become Boazania's Minister of Science and Technology, earning great respect for his contributions to the empire. He married a noblewoman named Lozaria, to whom he eventually revealed his secret, and she accepted him unconditionally; they had a son, who would later be known as Prince Heinel.
When the emperor died without a legitimate heir, Ra Gōru was next in line for the throne. However, his jealous and ambitious cousin, Zu Zambajil, exposed his hornless nature during the coronation ceremony. Branded a traitor, Ra Gōru was stripped of his title, separated from his wife and newborn son, and thrown into slavery. While imprisoned, he learned of Lozaria's death in childbirth. Consumed by grief and righteous anger, he used his scientific knowledge to incite and lead a series of slave rebellions against Zambajil’s forces. The rebellions failed, but his fellow slaves sacrificed themselves to help him escape Boazania in a spaceship. The ship crash-landed on Earth, where he was found and nursed back to health by a human scientist named Mitsuyō Gō.
Assuming the identity of Kentarō Gō, he married Mitsuyō and started a new family, having three sons: Kenichi, Daijirō, and Hiyoshi. He became a beloved father and husband, but he never forgot the threat posed by the Boazanian Empire. Foreseeing that Zambajil would eventually set his sights on Earth, Kentarō collaborated with his wife, Professor Hamaguchi, and General Oka to design and construct the super robot Voltes V as Earth's ultimate line of defense. His past as a Boazanian prince and his expertise as a former Minister of Science were crucial in creating the advanced technology of the robot and its support systems, including the Big Falcon carrier. Despite his peaceful life on Earth, he felt a deep responsibility to confront the tyranny of his home planet. Shortly after Hiyoshi was born, he tearfully left his family, promising to return within two months, and journeyed back to Boazania to appeal directly to Emperor Zambajil to cease his campaign of conquest. Instead of listening, Zambajil imprisoned him for refusing to use his genius to create weapons for the empire.
Throughout the series, Kentarō’s fate remains a mystery to his sons for a long time. He is eventually freed from prison by a resistance movement led by a horned noble named Dange, who had cut off his own horns in solidarity. His character is defined by a deep-seated pacifism and an unwavering commitment to justice, not revenge. He is driven by the desire to reform Boazanian society into one where the horned and hornless can coexist peacefully, a dream that has motivated him since his youth. In the final arc, he is reunited with his sons from Earth and his firstborn son, Prince Heinel. He plays a key role in the final revolution against Zambajil, and after the emperor's defeat, he ascends to the throne as the new ruler of Boazania. His first act as emperor is to abolish the oppressive caste system, finally fulfilling his lifelong ambition. Despite being separated from his Earth family once more, he maintains hope for the future, believing that advancements in space travel will one day allow them all to be together again. His most notable abilities are his unparalleled genius in engineering and the physical and space sciences, which allowed him to create Voltes V and lead technological revolutions on both Earth and Boazania.
